Della M. Logan Ex-Hermitage homemaker belonged to St. Stan's church Della M. Logan, East Lackawannock Township, formerly of Orangeville Road, Hermitage, passed away peacefully at 9:55 a.m. Thursday (4-25-02) in Countryside Convalescent Home, East Lackawannock Township. She was 93. Mrs. Logan was born April 19, 1909, in New Castle, a daughter of Henry Allshouse and Mary Catherine Bish Allshouse. Della attended New Castle schools and moved to the Shenango Valley in 1929. A homemaker, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Della was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Sharon. Her husband, John Francis Logan Sr., whom she married April 9, 1927, passed away Aug. 5, 1994. Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Mary Jane) Planton, Liberty Township, Trumbull County; and Jeanette McCauley, Sharpsville; two sons, John F. Logan Jr. and his wife Donna, Hermitage; and Thomas L. Logan and his wife Linda, Howland, Ohio; a sister, Tressia V. "Dolly" Smith, Batavia, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Della was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter; four brothers, Arthur B., David M., James H. and Lee R. Allshouse; two sisters, Susan Henry and Charlotte G. Altman; a granddaughter, Mary Paula McCauley; and a great-grandson, Avery John Thomas. LOGAN Paul R. Myers Mercer man was carpenter, Fellowship church member Paul R. Myers, 420 E. Beaver St., Mercer, died at 9:10 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2002, in his residence after a one-year illness. He was 46. Mr. Myers was born Dec. 20, 1955, in San Diego to Wallace Richard and Joyce Wood Myers. He was a carpenter with Valley Acoustics Inc., Youngstown. Mr. Myers was a member of Fellowship Community Church, Mercer. Surviving are: his wife, the former Vicki Ann Crocker, whom he married March 17, 1979; twin daughters, Candice R. Myers and Cori A. Myers; and two sons, Kyle B. Myers and Keith R. Myers, all at home; his mother, Joyce Wood Wheeler, Mercer; his father, Rick Myers, Salina, Kan.; two sisters, Susan Rodriguez, Woodlake, Calif.; and Mrs. Wynn (Donna) Oshiro, Honolulu; two stepsisters, Renee Baker and Mrs. Tom (Michelle) Voigt, both Fullerton, Calif.; and two stepbrothers, Lance Wheeler, Bremerton, Wash.; and Jeff Wheeler, Bakersfield, Calif. MYERS Edward Carl Spruk '61 Farrell grad was teacher in area school districts A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of family for Edward Carl Spruk of Hermitage. He died of natural causes at 7:25 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. He was 58. Born on Wednesday, June 2, 1943, in Sharon, Mr. Spruk was a son of the late Carl A. Spruk; and Mary R. Wasko Spruk, who survives in Hermitage. Mr. Spruk graduated in 1961 from Farrell High School and then served in the U.S. Navy until 1963. He earned a bachelor's degree in biology and science from Edinboro University in 1968, continuing on to earn a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Youngstown State University in 1976. Mr. Spruk taught in several schools including Sharpsville, Farrell, Jamestown and Brookfield, having last taught biology in Parma Heights (Ohio) School District. In his youth, he had been active in the area in Little League. Mr. Spruk was a car enthusiast who loved to do gardening and read. He was of the Catholic faith. Mr. Spruk enjoyed spending time with his cat, Lucky; and his dog, Zeke. In addition to his mother, Mr. Spruk is survived by: a sister, Cindy Spruk-Gargasz, Transfer; a brother, Mark A. Spruk, Hermitage; an aunt, Ann Gregory, Sharon; an uncle, Frank Wasko, Wheatland; and one nephew, three nieces and two great-nieces. Besides his father, who died Aug. 8, 1980, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Lee Crisan, who died Aug. 31, 2001. The family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Anthony's Church, 804 Idaho St., Sharon 16146.
SPRUK Bradley Bortner Bradley Bortner, 2356 Brian Lane, Hermitage, died at 3:27 p.m. Thursday (4-25-02) in UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh. He was 25. Obituary information was incomplete.
BORTNER Ann M. Joseph Ann M. Joseph, formerly of Shady Drive, Farrell, died Thursday (4-25-02) in Countryside Convalescent Home, East Lackawannock Township. She was 83. Obituary information was incomplete.
JOSEPH Jacob 'Jack' P. Schmidt Milwaukee man was Farrell grad, decorated WWII vet MILWAUKEE -- Jacob "Jack" P. Schmidt, Woods Road, Milwaukee, formerly of Farrell, died at 9:05 p.m. Tuesday evening, April 16, 2002, in his home after a lengthy illness. He was 81. Mr. Schmidt was born March 22, 1921, in Farrell, a son of Jacob Schmidt and Katherine Besich Schmidt. As a 1939 alumnus of Farrell High School, he played football and earned the name of "Patches," a nickname affectionately given him due to his many injuries. Mr. Schmidt later graduated as a metallurgical engineer from Case Engineering School in Cleveland. He was a president of J.P. Schmidt P.E. Inc. in Milwaukee, and was a long-standing member and Melvin Jones Fellow recipient in the Muskego (Wis.) Lions Club. A decorated veteran, during World War II Mr. Schmidt was a squadron leader in the 92nd Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force, having served over France and Germany. His wife of 59 years, the former Antoinette "Toni" Esplandieu, whom he married in November 1943, survives at home. Also surviving are: three daughters, Julie, wife of Robert Cannata, Santa Barbara, Calif.; Joy, wife of George Eisenberg, Milwaukee; and Jackie, wife of Charles Drueke, Muskego; four grandchildren, Katie Cannata, Jon Cannata, Jake Drueke and Mackenzie Drueke; and a sister, Alice, wife of Ernest Koss, Sharon. Mr. Schmidt was preceded in death by his parents. A funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 19, 2002, in St. Martin of Tours Church, Franklin, Wis., with the Rev. Tony Russo, pastor, as celebrant. A private family interment will be held in St. Martin of Tours Cemetery, Franklin. Olive H. Hilkirk Hermitage woman was club bridge player, enjoyed golfing A memorial service will be held Saturday for Olive H. Hilkirk, Whispering Oaks, 260 S. Buhl Farm Drive, formerly of Richmond Drive, both Hermitage. She died of natural causes at 8:26 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2002, in her home after an extended illness. She was 90. Mrs. Hilkirk was born Dec. 24, 1911, in Dairy, Pa., to Roy S. Hazlett and Evabell Large Hazlett. She was a 1930 graduate of Sharpsville High School. Mrs. Hilkirk was an avid bridge player and belonged to several area bridge clubs. She also loved playing golf and reading. Mrs. Hilkirk was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sharon. Her husband, Albert H. Hilkirk, died Feb. 22, 1981. Surviving are: two daughters, Joan M., wife of Harold "Gene" Miracle, Dayton, Ohio; and Carol A. Latham, Bay Village, Ohio; three granddaughters, Diane Latham, Cleveland; Karen Miracle, Dayton; and Amy Miracle, Denver, Colo.; two grandsons, Craig Latham and James Latham, both Cleveland; and three great-granddaughters, Margaret "Maggie" Latham, Grace Elizabeth Latham and Alexandra Olive Latham. Besides her husband, Mrs. Hilkirk was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Margaret McKnight and Evelyn Bumbulucz; and four brothers, Glenn, Kenneth, Charles and Raymond Hazlett. HILKIRK James Steven McArdle Newell Cleaners co-owner was noted in the business A funeral Mass will be held Monday for James Steven McArdle, 1075 Griswold St., Sharon, formerly of Covington, Ky.; and North Vernon, Ind. He passed away peacefully at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2002, in his residence following a lengthy illness. He was 92. Mr. McArdle was born Sept. 15, 1909, in Mason, W.Va., a son of Arthur McArdle and Leona Stanley McArdle. He attended schools in Mason. Mr. McArdle came to the Shenango Valley from Covington in 1953, and previously lived in North Vernon. With his wife, Pat, as a partner, he was owner and operator for 48 years of Newell Cleaners in Sharon. Mr. McArdle worked in the dry-cleaning business for more than 76 years, also serving as manager of dry-cleaning plants in North Vernon and Covington. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Sharon. In the December 2001 catalog of Cleaner's Supply, America's largest direct supplier of dry-cleaning products, Jim was featured in an advertisement at the age of 91 as America's longest practicing dry-cleaner. He was also featured in an article published on March 4, 2001, by The Herald, honoring his many years of service and experience in the dry-cleaning business. Surviving are: his wife, the former Helen Patricia "Pat" Haarmann, whom he married Dec. 23, 1948, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Ella) Hill, Cold Spring, Ky.; and Mrs. James (Dorothy) Hurtt, Alexander, Ky.; a son, James Kelly McArdle, Alexander, Ky.; two sisters, Eleanor Besselman, Canton, Ohio; and Glenna Fruith, Mason; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Mr. McArdle was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joseph McArdle; and a sister, Mary Eloise Roush.
