Allegheny County jurist is speaker for Law Day

A former Sharon resident, an Allegheny County Common Pleas Court judge since 1976, is returning to the Shenango Valley.

Judge R. Stanton Wettick Jr. will speak at the annual Law Day ceremony at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Acker Memorial Gazebo in Buhl Farm, Hermitage. In case of rain the event will be held at Sharon Country Club.

A graduate of Sharon schools, Wettick attended Amherst College in Massachusetts and Yale Law School. He is an adjunct professor of law at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and has been a faculty member since 1966.

Wettick has also been involved with numerous judicial activities including acting as co-chairman of the Allegheny County Bar Association and serving as a chairman and member of the Civil Procedural Rules Committee of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. He has also written a number of legal publications and articles.

Law Day was created in the United States to offset the former Soviet Union's celebration of May Day. It languished in Mercer County at the end of the Cold War.

In 2000 the Mercer County Bar Association and President Judge Francis J. Fornelli revived Law Day to promote an understanding of the law and to honor former Mercer County Common Pleas Court Judge Albert E. Acker, who died in 1998.
