Shuffleboard tourney, banquet among events

Sandy Lake Senior Community Center, division of Mercer County Area Agency on Aging Inc., 29 Railroad St., announces its May activities.

A public grand opening will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 10 for Shenango Valley Center for Aging and Geriatric Health, Hermitage. A buffet lunch will be provided. The event will include programs, educational information, demonstrations, a Chinese auction, door prizes, Tai Chi, balance exercises and screenings by UPMC Horizon and Primary Health Network. Sign up at the registration desk to ride transit to the event. The Sandy Lake center will close early that day.

The Jack Bestwick Memorial Shuffleboard Tournament will be held at 8:30 a.m. May 14. Call (724) 376-3608 to register. Although there is no registration fee, a donation will be accepted for lunch. Trophies will be provided by the Bestwick family.

From 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 15, Karen Kosnac of UPMC will give blood sugar screenings. A three-hour fast is required.

Glaucoma screening will be provided from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 21 by Keystone Blind Association, Sharon.

Senior Games will begin May 29 and continue until June 5. Call the center or the administration office at (800) 570-6222 for an application and event schedule.

A "55-Alive" Driving Class is set for 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 29-30. The handbook donation is $10.00. Call to register.

  • Saturday -- Bus trip to "Always Patsy Cline, " Warner Theater, Erie.

  • May 7 -- Bus trip to Blair with Grove City Center; and 11:20 a.m. Spring Flower Show.

  • May 8 -- 11:15 a.m., Massage therapy program by Charrice Lashinsky.

  • May 9 -- 9 a.m. Program Committee meeting; and 11:20 a.m., exercises for all.

  • May 10 -- 11 a.m., Mother's Day Program and bake sale.

  • May 13 -- 11:20 a.m., "Branson" video.

  • May 14 -- 11 a.m. to noon, Blood pressure screening with Life Force Ambulance Service; and 11:20 a.m., table game.

  • May 16 -- 11:15 a.m., Birthday and anniversary party with music by George and Marilyn Senn, John Miller and George Hancock.

  • May 17 -- 11:20 a.m., Family table feud.

  • May 20 -- 1120 a.m., Name-O.

  • May 21 -- 1 p.m., 500 card party. Call for a table reservation.

  • May 22 -- 11:20 a.m., Organ music.

  • May 23 -- 11:20 a.m., Poetry Day.

  • May 24 -- 11:20 a.m., Memorial Day Program.

  • May 27 -- Closed for Memorial Day.

  • May 28 -- 11:20 a.m., Wheel of Fortune.

  • May 29 -- 11:20 a.m., "Hummingbird" video.

  • Tuesday -- 9 a.m., Shuffleboard.

  • Wednesday -- 9 a.m., Line dance; 10:15 a.m., Seniorcise; and 1 p.m., Tai Chi.

  • Friday -- 10:15 a.m., Seniorcise.

    Call the center by May 15 for details and to register for the June 5 bus trip to "Annie Get Your Gun" at Carousel Dinner Theatre, Akron.

  • Oct. 15 -- Branson, Mo., Nov. 2-7.

  • Nov. 14 -- Christmas in Akron, Dec. 15.

    The center has 2002 property tax/rent rebate forms and PACE applications. Prescription drug discount program information is also available at the center from various companies.

    Lunch is available daily at noon with prior two-day-ahead reservation.

    Transportation is available. Call Mercer County Community Transit at (800) 222-8797 by 2 p.m., at least 24 hours in advance.
