Mother tongue gets a serious workout; local students win big at English Festival

Local students took part in English Festival 2002 in April at Youngstown State University.

The following local high school students won individually or as team members in festival contests:

  • Not-So-Trivial Pursuit -- Leeana Chetsko, Badger; Bryna Clover, Wilmington High School; and Kayla Lenkner, Greenville High School, all first prize; and Jessica Miller, Kennedy Catholic High School, Hermitage, second prize; and Nicholas Brink, Sharon High School, third prize.

  • Language Games -- Geraldine Truog, West Middlesex High School; Laura Cuff, Wilmington ; Anna Marie Mindocino, Kennedy Catholic; and Amy Carroll, Sharon , all first prize; and Andrew Wiesen and Laura Selenchik, both Kennedy Catholic, both second-prize.

  • Writing Games -- Sarah Walsh, Hubbard High School, third prize; Karen Flickinger, Hubbard , fourth prize; and Mark Swannell, Jamestown School; Ashley Snyder and Loni Sargent, both Hubbard ; and Emily Zgonc, Greenville , all honorable mention.

  • Journalism Workshop -- Jackie Becker, West Middlesex , second prize; and Rick Holzworth, West Middlesex; Teresa Lepak, Sharon; Mary Ellen Stoyer and Joy Ammons, both Greenville; and Trista Simon, Jamestown, all honorable mention.

  • Impromptu Writing -- Karen Flickinger, Hubbard, first prize; Jamie Goodge, Wilmington, second prize; and James Vasconi, Sharon; Kayla Lenkner, Greenville; and Loni Sargent, Hubbard, all honorable mention.

  • Candace Gay Memorial Award -- Kayla Lenkner, Greenville, finalist.
