SHENANGO VALLEY

Chorale marks 30 years of song

Shenango Valley Chorale is celebrating its 30th anniversary with two "A Salute to America" concerts.

The 80-voice chorale will sing American folk, religious, Broadway and patriotic songs at 7:30 p.m. Friday in East Main Presbyterian Church, Grove City, and at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church, Sharon.

Songs include "Down in the Valley," "Shenandoah," "Alleluia," "Ride On, King Jesus," "God Bless America" "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and selections from "Oklahoma" and "West Side Story."

The chorale is directed by Edgar S. Groves and accompanied by Cynthia Ward and Raymond Ocock.

The chorale was founded by William Blough, longtime Sharon High School choral director, and some of his students. It sang its first concert June 4, 1972.

The chorale grew in number and reputation under Blough's direction, and started the tradition of performing Christmas and spring concerts, and special concerts in communities.

Blough retired in 1988 and was replaced by Dr. Tod N. Trimble. During his tenure, the chorale incorporated as a nonprofit organization and assisted in the founding of what is now known as the Shenango Area Youth Chorus.

Dr. Bruno Kazenas took over in 1992 after Trimble's resignation and was instrumental in starting the annual madrigal dinners at Tara in Clark.

Groves, former choral director at Hickory High School and now affiliated with Grove City College, has been director since 1995. He initiated free midwinter concerts of works by popular classical composers.

Tickets: at the door.
