Brawl earns Wilson summer in jail

The only adult charged in a Feb. 2 brawl at a Sharon-Farrell basketball game was sentenced Friday to county jail time.

"Basically, he loses his summer vacation," Lorinda Hinch, First Assistant District Attorney, said of Jesse J. "J.J." Wilson, 20, of Sherman Ave., Sharon.

Mercer County Common Pleas Court Judge Thomas R. Dobson sentenced Wilson for 60 days to 18 months in Mercer County Jail and $100 fine, she said.

The hearing passed quietly, with a few of Wilson's relatives speaking on his behalf, Ms. Hinch said.

Wilson pleaded guilty March 21 to resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. More serious charges of aggravated and simple assault, reckless endangerment and rioting were dropped.

Wilson, a student at the University of Cincinnati, does not have to report until June 19, after classes have ended. He should be out of jail before he has to report back to school at the end of August, Ms. Hinch said.

"We did not ask the court to jeopardize his schooling," she said.

Wilson is a former Farrell High football standout and is a strong safety for Cincinnati's football team.

"We were satisfied with the sentence," said District Attorney James Epstein.

The brawl started as a fight between a boy and a girl, one from Sharon and one from Farrell, in the stands at the game at Sharon High School, Epstein said.

Police moved into the stands, but were surrounded by students, one of whom tried to stop them from breaking up the fight.

Between 70 and 100 people were involved in the melee, which was videotaped, police said.

The fights spilled out of the gym to a commons area, and some re-erupted at the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System, police said. Sixteen people were treated at local hospitals.

With his plea, Wilson admitted trying to interfere with the arrest of a juvenile relative, and struggling with police, Epstein said.

Eight juveniles have been charged in Mercer County Juvenile Court stemming from the brawl.

Four of the cases have been concluded before Judge Francis J. Fornelli, Epstein said. One is set to be heard in about two weeks, and three others have not been scheduled.

Epstein said he is barred by law from disclosing the outcomes of the concluded cases.

"The underlying philosophy that's still the law is the rehabilitation of the juvenile," he said. "By not naming the juvenile, you facilitate that."
