WILMINGTON TOWNSHIP, LAWRENCE COUNTY

Wayward horse holds up traffic on Route 60

A horse held up traffic for at least 45 minutes on state Route 60 in Neshannock Township Wednesday evening.

According to Neshannock Township police superintendent Phil Carlo, the horse was attached to an Amish buggy owned by Jacob Mast of R.D. 1 Box 189, Wilmington Township, Lawrence County, when it broke free from its harness shortly before 7:30 p.m.

Mast had been on a side road near route 60, when the horse broke free and pushed through a barrier fence on the freeway, about two miles south of the Mitchell Road exit in Neshannock Township, Carlo said.

"The horse was all over the place," Carlo said, referring to the divided highway. "When the officers got there, a lot of people had stopped to help round up the horse."

No one was hurt, but the horse had severe lacerations on its legs due to the swinging of the harness strap, Carlo said, adding that Mast walked the horse home.
