JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP

Man in critical condition after crash

A Sharpsville man was in critical condition this morning at UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after a two-vehicle accident at 2:50 p.m. on U.S. Route 62 at Charleston Road in Jefferson Township, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Steve Yaksich, 80, is in a coma after the accident and was to be flown to a Pittsburgh hospital but bad weather prevented that Wednesday, Jefferson-Clark Regional police said.

Yaksich stop at a stop sign on Charleston Road and drove onto Route 62 into the path of an eastbound Central Heaing and Plumbing van driven by employee Marc Smith, 33, of Sharon, police said.

Yaksich's passenger, Richard Thompson, 45, of 1062 Greenfield Road, Hermitage, was treated at UPMC Horizon, Farrell; Smith was treated at the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System, police said.

Route 62 was closed for 45 minutes as police, Jefferson Township firefighters and the Mercer County Sheriff's Department cleared the scene.
