Man waives hearing after arrest for failing to show up for court

A man who failed to show up for his preliminary hearing Wednesday was arrested a day later and waived to court a charge of possession of marijuana.

Michael Crawford, 20, who has no known address, was arrested at 10:55 a.m. while walking along Lions Club Lane, Farrell. Police said they picked him up on a warrant from the office of District Justice Henry J. Russo, Hermitage, for failing to appear.

He was taken before Russo, waived his right to counsel and his preliminary hearing and was released on his own recognizance, officials said.

Crawford had been arrested on the marijuana charge at 1:27 p.m. April 5 at 939 Fruit Ave., Farrell, police said.

Police said they spotted Crawford walking in the 900 block of Wallis Avenue, Farrell, and, knowing there was a criminal trespass warrant for him, attempted to stop him.

Crawford ran but was soon caught, police said. After he was arrested, police said they retraced his path and found a bag of marijuana under a vehicle in the back yard at 939 Fruit.

The criminal trespass charge was filed March 7 after Crawford was found sleeping at 11:18 a.m. Feb. 20 at 911 Market Ave., Farrell, a Mercer County Housing Authority apartment, police said.

Crawford was given notice Sept. 6 that he was banned from authority property, police said.

The warrant was issued after Crawford failed to respond to a citation.

Crawford pleaded guilty April 5 and was fined $50 and costs.
