Richard L. Cione
Westinghouse retiree was WWII Air Force veteran

A funeral Mass will be held Monday for Richard L. Cione, 418 Patton Ave., Farrell. He died of natural causes at 7:11 p.m. Thursday (5-9-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. He was 76.

Mr. Cione was born May 1, 1926, in Sharon to Joseph Cione and Helen Nicastro Cione.

He was employed for 32 years at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he was a coil winder and a group leader in the I-40 Building.

An Air Force veteran, Mr. Cione served during World War II, stationed at Randolph Field, Texas.

He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather; his children were the light of his life.

His wife, the former Frances DePreta, whom he married Feb. 1, 1947, survives, at home.

Also surviving are: two sons, Richard Cione Jr. and Joseph Cione, husband of Lisa, all Farrell; four daughters, Linda Klamer, Farrell; and Debra O'Donnell, wife of Patrick; Donna Rodgers, wife of John; and Mary Tremmel, wife of Joseph, all Hermitage; a brother, William Cione, husband of Margaret, Sharon; three sisters, Ida Pacileo, wife of Vincent, Vienna; Diane Bayer, wife of Albert, Brookfield; and Antoinette Bruder, wife of Edward, Rockville, Md.; and his grandchildren, Monica Speir and her husband David; Kris O'Donnell, Darin O'Donnell, Ian Rodgers, Maria Rodgers, Michael Rodgers, Theresa Tremmel, Melissa Tremmel and Joshua Cione.

Mr. Cione was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James and Melvin Cione; and two sisters, Jennie Kempa and Emma Zec.

A funeral service will be held Monday for Robert William Zickar of 709 S. Mercer Ave., Hermitage. He passed away at 12:55 a.m. Friday (5-10-02) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. He was 70.

Mr. Zickar was born Sept. 13, 1931, in Farrell, a son of the late Louis and Anna Zager Zickar.

He was a 1949 graduate of Farrell High School and a 1954 alumnus of Ohio Northern University, Ada, where he earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy. While there, Mr. Zickar was a member of Phi Mu Delta fraternity.

He began his career at the former Hamilton Drug Store in Farrell, and shortly afterward, bought McFarland's Drug Store in Sharpsville, renaming it Zickar's Pharmacy. He owned and operated his pharmacy on Main Street in Sharpsville for 17 years; it was renowned for its coffee stirs.

Mr. Zickar then became chief pharmacist at UPMC Horizon, Farrell, where he started the first intravenous programs. During that time, he also served as an adjunct professor of pharmacy at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh.

After his retirement from UPMC in 1985, he was affiliated with the former Greenwood Pharmacy in Hermitage and Valley Pharmacy, Farrell.

Mr. Zickar was a member of St. Bartholomew's Church, Sharpsville, and the Slovenian Workingmen's Educational Club in Sharon, which he served as a trustee.

He was also a former member of the Farrell Kiwanis Club and Shenango Valley Jaycees.

Survivors include: his wife, the former Kathryn E. Walko, whom he married Nov. 14, 1959; a daughter, Julie Ann Gordon, wife of William Jeffrey Gordon, Dublin, Ohio; three brothers, Louis Zickar and his wife Dorothy, Boardman, Ohio; Raymond Zickar and his wife Kathryn, Hermitage; and Frank Zickar and his wife Frances, Sharon; and two grandchildren, William Ryan Gordon and Abigail Katherine Gordon.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Steve Yaksich

Sharon Steel retiree, farmer belonged to Hickory VFW

A funeral service will be held Monday for Steve Yaksich, 580 Clay Furnace Road, Clark. He died at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, from injuries he suffered in an automobile crash the day before. He was 83.

Mr. Yaksich was born Dec. 18, 1918, in Farrell to Mata Yaksich and Yaga Yaksich.

He retired in 1982 as a car blocker for the former Sharon Steel Corp. in Farrell, where he was employed for 33 years.

Mr. Yaksich was also a lifetime farmer.

He was of the Protestant faith and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Margaret D. Conner, whom he married Feb. 19, 1972, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Karen) Zahniser, Sharpsville; three sons, Timothy Lloyd Yaksich, North Fort Myers, Fla.; Marvin O. Thompson and his wife Diane, Mercer; and Richard A. Thompson and his wife Darlene, Hermitage; a sister, Mrs. George (Frances) Fiedler, Greenville; 10 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Mr. Yaksich was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Steve Yaksich and Barney Thompson; a brother, Frank Yaksich; and two sisters, Mary Morel and Barbara Balko.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Emma F. Billioni, Parkview Residential Home, Santa Clara, formerly of Lyle Drive, Hermitage, and Lafayette Street, Sharon, died at 4:31 a.m. Friday (5-10-02) in Kaiser Permanente Medical Center. She was 89.

Obituary information was incomplete.

Thelma Jane McDougall

Retired store clerk belonged to Covenant Presbyterian

A funeral service will be held Monday for Thelma Jane McDougall, Bentley House, formerly of Baker Avenue, both Hermitage. She passed away at 4:32 a.m. Friday (5-10-02) in the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 82.

Miss McDougall was born Sept. 9, 1919, in Grove City, a daughter of Thomas Elmer McDougall and Anna Filer McDougall.

She attended schools in Grove City and Farrell and was a 1937 graduate of Farrell High School.

Miss McDougall retired in 1978 as a sales clerk from the former G.C. Murphy Co. in Sharon, where she worked for 23 years. She worked during World War II at the former Carnegie Steel Co. in Farrell.

She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and American Legion, both Sharon; and Rebekah Lodge 110, Sharpsville.

Miss McDougall also belonged to the Republican Ladies Organization and was a volunteer at Mercer County unit of American Red Cross.

In addition to the staff of Bentley House, her caregivers included Marlene J. Reagle, Denise O'Brien, Kathy Szabo and Beverly Nelson.

She had no survivors. Miss McDougall was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Eleanor Cameron; and four brothers, Alton, Wallace, Eugene and Willard McDougall.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Lillian P. Malatesta

Ex-Farrell woman belonged to Jehovah's Witnesses

Lillian P. Malatesta, formerly of Shenango Boulevard, Farrell, died at 2:45 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2002, in Clepper Manor, Sharon, after an extended illness. She was 87.

She was the wife of Alfred A. Malatesta.

Born on Tuesday, May 26, 1914, in Sharon, Mrs. Malatesta was a daughter of the late William and Bessie Husband Reeves.

She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses congregation, Hermitage.

Lillian was very dedicated to her faith and active in her congregation before her illness.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by: a daughter, Jeannette, wife of John Revis, Sharon; a son, Rick, husband of Judy Malatesta, Hermitage; and a son, Terry, husband of Mona Malatesta, Hubbard. She is also survived by four grandchildren.

Mrs. Malatesta was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Harvey Reeves; and two sisters, Isabel Troutman and Jean Morsillo.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Greater Youngstown Chapter, Box 321, Canfield, OH 44406-0321.
