Cops nab stabbing suspect in park

A former Farrell man was arrested in Sharon two days after he allegedly kidnapped his ex-girlfriend, hit her with a golf club and stabbed a stranger, police said.

Dewayne G. Johnson, 30, of New Castle, formerly of Farrell, was arrested at 3:38 p.m. Friday in Bicentennial Park on a warrant from New Castle police for aggravated assault, simple assault, kidnapping, recklessly endangering another person, harassment, criminal trespass and burglary, Sharon police said.

It all started, police said, when Johnson broke into the home of Tina L. Gregory, 28, of 1156 Hamilton Ave., Farrell, at about 2:20 a.m. Wednesday and wanted her to take him to her new boyfriend's house.

According to the New Castle police report:

Ms. Gregory told police they drove to New Castle and she picked a house at random.

Ms. Gregory knocked on the door at 407 Epworth St. and ran inside when the door opened. She hid behind a man, Eugene Smith, who was in the house.

Fredrick Jay, a resident of 407 Epworth, told police he tried to calm Johnson but Johnson stabbed Smith.

Johnson picked up a golf club and hit Ms. Gregory in the side of her forehead. She ran into the street and crawled under a truck where she thought Johnson couldn't reach her.

Johnson drove away but called 911 on his cellular phone a short time later and said he was going to kill himself. Johnson told an emergency dispatcher in Butler County, where his call was received, that he was on his way to the Shenango Dam in Mercer County.

Johnson asked to talk to Ms. Gregory and his call was transferred to St. Francis Hospital in New Castle, where she was being treated. Ms. Gregory spoke to Johnson but couldn't get his location. Johnson also spoke to his brother-in-law in New Castle.

At about 4:38 a.m. a policeman spoke to Johnson via his cell phone and Johnson asked police to ask Ms. Gregory, "Why did she lead me on like this? Why is she playing with me ...?"

Johnson then told the officer he was on his way to Canada to join the French Foreign Legion and hung up the phone.

Smith was treated for cuts to his arm and chest at St. Francis Hospital, police said.

State police in Mercer County and New Castle searched for Johnson, and New York state authorities were on the lookout for him.

Johnson was scheduled to be arraigned on the charges today.

In January, Johnson was charged by Mercer County Southwest Regional Police with aggravated and simple assault, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct after he allegedly assaulted another man in September on Idaho Street in Farrell. Johnson punched Adrian Baker in the face three times, shattering his eye socket, while another man held Baker's shoulders, police said.
