MERCER

Meandering through Mercer

AS THIS is my first column, I would like you to know a little about me. Although I grew up in the Mercer area, I was gone for many years.

In March of 2000, my husband and I had the opportunity to buy his family's old 53-acre homestead. It had been in the family from 1839 until purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kish in 1961.

At the time we purchased the property, it was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hutton. Mrs. Hutton was the widow of Louis Kish. We have now torn down the old house, built a new one and are happily entrenched in Mercer County again. It is true that you can't take the country out of the boy, I guess.

It is very interesting to see what is the same and what is different around and about Mercer. I want to hear from people. I want to hear your news and pass it on. I think it is a wonderful way to get reacquainted with old friends and hopefully make new ones.

May is a busy month

May is a very busy month. There are many First Communions, graduations and other events to celebrate this month and in June.

Our neighbors, Ervin and Linda Myers, just returned from Florida where they celebrated the birthday of their son, the birthday of their granddaughter and Mother's Day all in one trip.

Mr. and Mrs. James Noble traveled to Holland, Pa. for their grandson's First Communion on May 5. Mr. and Mrs. James Hogan also attended a First Communion in New York state for their grandson last weekend.

Our children honored our 40th anniversary with a wonderful party at the Magoffin Inn on Saturday, May 4. What a beautiful B&B.

Borough yard sale Saturday

Don't forget about the borough yard sale and Merchants Sidewalk Sale coming up on May 18.

For information or to list your address call: Sandy Lord, 724-662-0464 or Ann Hausser, 724-662-3883. The Civic Committee of the Mercer Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors this.

It seems like a good event to support and a lot of fun to boot.

Other happenings of note

Tuesday -- Mercer Borough Council meets at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday -- Herb Thymers Plant Sale; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 149 Donation Road, Greenville.

Display American pride

The Mercer Area Chamber of Commerce would like all businesses, government buildings, etc. to decorate the buildings in red, white, and blue for the summer.

This is to honor our country and show pride in out town. The Civic Committee and the Chamber are planning to decorate the evergreen tree on the courthouse lawn and the horse heads also.

Well that is all the "Meandering through Mercer" for now. Get those crops and gardens planted and get your news to me.
