WILMINGTON TOWNSHIP, LAWRENCE COUNTY

Home-invasion, assault goes to county court

The case of a New Castle man charged with attempted rape, aggravated assault, burglary and robbery was bound over to Lawrence County Common Pleas Court.

Charges against Dale E. Hunter, 40, were bound to court Monday by District Justice James A. Reed, Neshannock Township.

Hunter is accused of attacking a 30-year-old Wilmington Township woman last week.

According to state police:

  • At about 8 p.m. May 8 the woman's doorbell rang. She opened her patio door, stepped out and saw nothing. When she turned to go inside, Hunter grabbed her and forced her inside.

  • The woman grabbed her daughter and tried to run but Hunter tackled her. She told her daughter to run.

  • The woman told Hunter that she was going to get her dog, and Hunter said "I know you don't have the dog anymore." He said he wanted money and ripped two gold and diamond rings from her finger.

  • In the ensuing struggle, Hunter tore the victim's shirt and attempted to pull her pants off. Hunter also tried to strangle the woman. The woman kneed him in the groin and he ran, telling her not to call police or he would come back and kill her.
According to police, neighbors said the description of the alleged attacker matched a man they knew as "Rocketman." Hunter's nickname is "Rocketman," police said.

Police said they found Hunter at home. He told them he had been home all evening and asked them to check his car, police said. The engine and radiator hose were hot, police said. The woman identified Hunter at the New Castle state police barracks, police said. He remains in Lawrence County Jail after failing to post bond.
