A Sharon policeman was assaulted Wednesday after a vehicle pursuit, police said.

Cpl. James Masotto was treated at the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after being hit in the head by Alfred Junior Boatwright, 47, of 366 Wheeler Place, Sharon, police said.

The incident started on Mesabi Street when Masotto saw Boatwright's car traveling in the wrong lane, nearly colliding with an oncoming car, police said. Masotto followed Boatwright onto New Castle Avenue to Budd Street where he put on his lights to stop the car, police said.

Masotto continued to pursue Boatwright until he finally pulled over in the 500 block of Davis Street, police said.

Masotto ordered Boatwright to stay in the car with his hands up but Boatwright got out and approached Masotto and would not get back in his car, police said.

Masotto pushed Boatwright back in the car but Boatwright got out again and ran toward Masotto, police said. Boatwright struggled with Masotto and hit him in the head, police said. It took two other policemen and pepper spray to handcuff Boatwright, police said.

Police said they found marijuana and rolling papers in Boatwright's pockets.

He was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest, fleeing and eluding, possession of a small amount of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and six traffic violations.

He was arraigned before District Justice James E. McMahon, Sharon, and was taken to Mercer County Jail after failing to post $10,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is set for 10:30 a.m. May 23.
