City will pay to move lines for new road

Sharon City Council Thursday agreed to pay Pennsylvania Power Company $92,000 to relocate power lines that will be in the way of a planned access road.

The city is planning to build an access road for large trucks that would run between Dock Street and Dayton Way to alleviate truck traffic through downtown. But an overhead electrical distribution pole on a concrete island in the middle of the road has to be relocated.

The cost of the project is being covered by a state grant.

Randy Coleman, area manager for Penn Power, said the work should take between two to four weeks to complete but it will take about eight weeks for the necessary equipment to be delivered.

Initially Coleman said he thought the project could cost as much as $200,000 but then realized that an existing line could be adapted and tied into a new substation on Silver Street.

Penn Power will have to temporarily cut power to several nearby businesses, including the Shenango Valley Library, Coleman said. He said the outages should only last a few hours and the times will be arranged with the businesses.

Since the city is paying Penn Power the $92,000 up front, the city won't have to pay any additional money if the project costs more than the estimate, Coleman said. He said Penn Power will have to pay any costs above and beyond except for overtime. Coleman said the only way he foresees needing overtime is if local businesses won't cooperate during the project.
