MERCER

Skateboards, more banned in zones

Mercer council banned people from riding skateboards, scooters, in-line skates or roller skates on state highways and in commercial zoning districts.

Council Tuesday approved the ordinance, which follows a temporary ordinance adopted last month banning skateboarding while council investigated the issue.

Among the streets where the law prohibits skateboarding and related activities are U.S. routes 62 and 19, state routes 58 and 158 and the area around the courthouse.

Skateboarding is also prohibited in commercial areas zoned C-1 and C-2. Residents may pick up a colored zoning map at the borough office to see what specific streets are in the zones.

According to the ordinance, skateboards, scooters, in-line skates or roller skates used in prohibited areas may be impounded by the police. Anyone convicted of violating the ordinance may be fined a maximum of $25.
