JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP

Man, 19, killed in ATV race in Forest County

A Jefferson Township man was killed while racing in an all-terrain vehicle race Saturday afternoon in Forest County.

Eric J. Young, 19, of 1500 Bend Road, died from accident-related injuries after he crashed his ATV while trying to make a turn on a slight curve during the Marienville Tour de Forest. His ATV went off the course and along a bank for 43 feet before hitting a tree, state police out of Forest County said.

Officials said it was unknown what caused Young's ATV to leave the course.

Young was flown to Clarion Hospital in Clarion County where he was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

The race is held about four miles west of Marienville in Howe Township, police said.

The annual two-day event, which began in 1995, is sponsored by the Marienville Volunteer Fire Co., according to a fire official with the department, who added that this was the first fatality in the history of the race.

Police said Young was wearing a helmet.
