MERCER

Woman's Club enjoyed a good run over 90 years

This month, after nearly 90 years, the Mercer Woman's Club will disband.

According to the club's history, the club began in 1913, when three young mothers met to discuss their problems after purchasing books on child care from a traveling salesman. Soon 10 other women joined them and they became known as the Mother's Club.

In 1917 the Mother's Club elected its first president and started the milk fund for school children. The club, open to all young mothers, collected dues and held fund-raising projects.

The club's official records start in 1926, when it had about 85 members. Projects included milk for school children, helping the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Red Cross relief and the Women's Christian Temperance Union knitting fund.

In 1934, the club, now with a membership of about 100, held its first Charity Ball on New Year's Eve. The ball raised $70.22. The club used the money to buy glasses and pay for tonsillectomies for children in the town.

During this time, the name of the club was changed to the Mercer Woman's Club and became affiliated with the county federation.

A few years later, club members were informed they had to be affiliated with the state and general federation as well as the county. The club withdrew from the county federation for a while, then in 1946 members voted to join the national, state and county federations.

In 1945 the club received a letter from the Grove City Junior Woman's Club asking to start a junior club in Mercer. Because it was during the war, there were many young women in town with not many social opportunities because the young men were not available. A junior club was organized with 41 charter members. The junior club dissolved in 1962 and merged with the senior club due to low membership.

During its run, the Mercer Woman's Club made donations towards Brandy Springs Park, organized the Parent-Teacher Association and the community library, supported the Women's Medical College in Philadelphia and helped bring foreign students from abroad to study in this country.
