A Brookfield High School student is $500 richer and plans to put her extra cash toward college.

Carrie Zachar, 16, won an anti-drug art contest, sponsored by the Trumbull County Drug Task Force. The prize was a $500 savings bond.

She designed the poster as an art-class project. Her design contains a pill bottle and syringe on the left and a marijuana leaf and scattered pills on the right. Large letters in the middle of the sign read: "Stop the Drugs and You'll Fight the Crime."

Carrie said she didn't expect to win but was "really surprised and excited" to find out that she did. She said it took her three days to complete the sign in her art class.

The contest was open to all high school art departments in Trumbull County, but only Brookfield participated. A jury selected Carrie's art out of 36 other designs.

Entry criteria were that the illustrations had to include the name of the task force, telephone number and Web site. Entries also had to promote a positive message about the task force's duties.

Carrie said her classmates were happy for her.

Mary Jo Floryjanski, art teacher at Brookfield High, said she assigned the projects to four of her classes and was delighted to hear that Carrie won.

"Carrie is a standout student both academically and artistically," Ms. Floryjanski said.

"I thought it was great that a Brookfield student was selected and Brookfield was represented as far as taking part in a community-sponsored activity," she added.

Carrie's design will appear on two billboards in Trumbull County for two months -- one on U.S. Route 422 and the other near the state Route 5 bypass in Champion.
