MERCER COUNTY

21% of voters went to polls on Tuesday

Twenty-one percent of Mercer County's 74,124 registered voters cast ballots in Tuesday's primary election, according to unofficial election results.

A slightly larger percentage of county Democrats voted Tuesday -- 25.8 percent -- than Republicans -- 21 percent. The higher turnout among Democrats was expected, with the 7th District state house and the party's gubernatorial nominations up for grabs.

Tuesday's polling marked the smoothest run so far for the county's relatively new electronic voting system. Voters approved the system two years ago, before anyone ever heard of a hanging chad, and it lived up its hype in the primary by delivering results quickly and apparently accurately. Final unofficial results were completely tallied and posted online at the county's Web site by 10 p.m., earlier than any election in recent memory.

Those results won't be final until county commissioners sign off on the official count.

Complete unofficial results of Tuesday's primary balloting in Mercer County are available on the county's Web site: www.mcc.co.mercer.pa.us
