Reservoir drained by water leak

Jamestown residents are being asked to conserve water this weekend to avoid depleting the borough's water supply after a leak was discovered Thursday in a water line.

"The borough is experiencing a depletion in the water reservoir and is asking that residents reserve water over the weekend," a recorded message tells callers to the town's borough building.

James Leary, Jamestown Municipal Authority board member, said a leak leading into the borough's 550,000-gallon reservoir was discovered early Thursday morning.

If it hadn't been found then, the leak could have drained the town's entire water supply, Leary said.

"A lot of people are coming over here for Memorial Day and we were concerned about that, but things seem to be working all right now," he said. "People are using less water than usual."

Leary said an old water line just outside the reservoir broke sometime this week.

A borough employee noticed the water level in the town's reservoir was going down and suspected a leak, Leary said. The leak was discovered around 11 a.m. Thursday.

Leary said the pressurized water lines should be working well by this evening, but residents should continue to reserve water.

Rudzik Excavating Inc. and Pipeline Systems Inc., who are working on the borough's new water system, helped fix the leak.

"The break was repaired and the contractors who are doing the new lines helped to put the lines back together and fill it off."

Blenda Davis, owner of Blenda's Floral Design, 202 Summit St., of Jamestown said she and other business owners were notified by authorities early Thursday morning about a possible water line break.

She said the borough prepared businesses quickly and also notified residents with leaflets distributed door-to-door by Jamestown High School students..

"It never came to pass," she said. "We didn't lose any water, but we were warned that we could. I don't think it actually came to the point that anybody was without water."
