Parades, services planned

Sharon

  • Memorial Day Parade at 11 a.m. along East State Street and North Oakland Avenue, concluding at Oakwood Cemetery.

    A Memorial Day service will be held at the cemetery.

    The parade will form at 10:30 a.m. behind Sharon High School.

    The following streets will be closed for the parade: Case Avenue from Linden Street to East State Street; East State Street from Case Avenue west to North Oakland Avenue, North Oakland Avenue north to Oakwood Cemetery entrance and all cross streets along East State Street and North Oakland Avenue.

    Grove City

  • Memorial Day services conducted by Grove City Veterans Council at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Crestview Memorial Park, Rt. 173, north of Grove City.

    Commander Richard Mackel, U.S. Navy, retired, is master of ceremonies. Lt. Col. David R. Taylor, U.S. Air Force, retired, will deliver the address. Harrisville Community Band will provide music.

    Following the service, the Ladies Auxiliary of the John R. Huff American Legion Post 220 and Claire Van Eman Post 519 will place wreaths at the monument and Grove City Area Veterans Honor Roll in Grove City Memorial Park.

    Participants and attendants are invited for food and refreshments at the John R. Huff post on South Broad Street.

    Hermitage

  • Memorial Day Parade hosted by Hickory Veterans of Foreign Wars. Post 6166 starting at 9:30 a.m. on Kilgore Street between L&M Tire and Bolotins.

    The parade will move west on State Street to Hillcrest Cemetery. The route is being used due to construction on state Route 18.

    Their will also be a service hosted by the Hickory Veterans of Foreign Wars at the cemetery with the Rev. Douglas K. Dayton, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, Sharon, as main speaker on Memorial Day.

    Rev. Dayton became an Episcopal priest after retiring from the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel. He served stateside at Lakland Air Force Hamilton Air Force bases and NHA Trang Air Base in Vietnam. The Rev. Dayton also served at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado and Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

    His last assignment was Grove City College, where he was professor of aerospace studies for the ROTC Detachment. His awards and decorations include Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Metal, Air Force Commendations with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Outstanding Unit Award with V Device, Vietnamese Honor Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with four Battle Stars and the Vietnam Service Medal.

    Greenville

  • Bush Letter Presentation Ceremony at 11 a.m. May 29 in Howard Miller Center's Sawhill-Georgian Room on the campus of Thiel College, Greenville.

    About 35 years ago, while serving in Vietnam, Marine Lt. Paul Bush, a Thiel graduate, sent a Christmas card to a class in Peebles School near Pittsburgh. The teacher, Mrs. Sally Rodgers Held, saved the letter and recently rediscovered it. Bush was the first Vietnam War casualty from Greenville. The military room of the Marietta Roth House Museum, College Avenue, Greenville, is named in his honor.

    Pastor Martin Roth of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Greenville, and a Thiel classmate of Bush's, will tell of their friendship during the presentation. The Vietnam and military affairs coordinator from the office of U.S. Republican Senator Rick Santorum also will speak. Dr. Michael Bray, of Thiel College, will provide music. Greenville Area Historical Society will serve refreshments. There will be a tour of Marietta Roth House Museum.

    Jackson Center

  • Memorial Day program at 11 a.m. at the fire hall in Jackson Center. The Boy Scouts are going to do a flag ceremony along with other events.

    New Wilmington

  • Memorial service at 11 a.m. hosted by the Harry A. Shaffer American Legion Post 728.

    The Rev. William H. Stone Jr. will dedicate the newly rebuilt monument at Neshannock and High streets.

    Volunteer workers from the community, along with donations, helped rebuild the monument. The legion has added a plaque to honor the two soldiers from New Wilmington killed in the line of duty during World War II -- John Robinson and Glenn McConnell -- to the monument, which is dedicated to all veterans.

    A new 40-foot flag pole will be dedicated to all those who volunteer their time within the community.

    Plaques will be presented to both Wilmington township Lawrence and Mercer counties to honor those killed in the line of duty.

    In case of rain the Neshannock Presbyterian Church will host the event.

    Sharpsville

  • Memorial Day observance begins at 9 a.m.

    A parade will form at Sharpsville Plaza with a wreath laying ceremony and rifle salute at the Memorial in the Park after the flag raising.

    The parade will move onto Walnut Street, east on Shenango Avenue to Mercer Avenue, east to Line Street into Riverside Cemetery to the Memorial Stand. A memorial service will be held there.

    Sharpsville High School Band, directed by Andrew Erb, will provide music. The Rev. Wayne Sutton, pastor of First Baptist Church, Sharpsville, will give the invocation. Alex Kovach will read Logan's Orders. A sound track from Boy Scout Troop 45 will be played in reverence to the American flag.

    Colin Ward will give Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. The Rev. Lee Weber, pastor of First United Methodist Church, Sharpsville, will also speak.

    Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6404, Sharpsville, will conduct a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial.

    Julius Caracci will read "A Lonely Day in May." There will be a ceremony at the mound by Sharpsville American Legion Post 162 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. American Legion, Sons of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will give a rifle salute. Ryan Sobash will play Taps; and Tyler Sobash, Echo. Both are Sharpsville High band members.

    Borough officials, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars post and their auxiliaries, Sons of the Legion Post 162, Cub Pack 45, Boy Scout Troop 45, Blue Star Mothers Chapter 4, Mercer County 40&8 Locomotive, Sharpsville and South Pymatuning firemen and other groups will take part.

    W. Middlesex, Shenango Twp.

  • Veteran's Day parade at 10 a.m. on Main Street in West Middlesex.

  • "Laying of the Roses" Ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Korean War Memorial hosted by Korean War Memorial Veterans of Mercer County.

    The memorial is west of West Middlesex on state Route 318 at the state line, next to Oak Tree Country Club. All are welcome to participate, including families of veterans, MIAs and KIAs.

    Bring your lawn chairs. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony.

    Lakeview

  • Memorial Day Remembrance for the communities of the Lakeview area at 2 p.m. Sunday in Oak Hill Cemetery located on Route 173, just outside of Sandy Lake.

    The program will include the honor guard from the Reynolds Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, the playing of bagpipes, words of greetings from local and state officials, and the sounding of taps.

    Guest speaker will be the Rev. Edmond C. Gresick, a Vietnam veteran and pastor of the Stoneboro United Methodist Church.

    The event is sponsored by the Lakeview Area Ministerium and the Scott Black Funeral Home. According to local officials this will be the first Memorial Day event in the community for over 20 years.

    In case of inclement weather, the event will take place at the Sandy Lake Wesleyan Church.

    New Bedford

  • Services will be held at 10:20 a.m. Saturday in New Bedford.

    A parade, beginning will be followed with a memorial service conducted at 11 at the Hopewell Cemetery. Area pastors will officiate with Lawrence County Commissioner Ed Fosnaught as guest speaker.

    The "Star Spangled Banner" and "Stars and Stripes Forever" will be presented by the Greyhound Marching Band, directed by Gary Taylor. The band front is directed by Tracy Syphard-Shaner. In case of inclement weather, the service will be conducted at the New Bedford Presbyterian Church.

  • At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, New Bedford Presbyterian Church will host a special service, "Salute to Our Fallen Heroes and Veterans."

    The musical service will be led by the choir under the direction of George Fynes. Local firemen and policemen also will be recognized for their contributions to the community.

    Farrell

  • Parade, hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286, begins at 9 a.m. Monday.

    Parade route is down Indiana Avenue to Roemer Boulevard up Roemer to the monument.

    Guest speaker will be retired Army Col. Gary G. Solander.

    Refreshments, provided by the Veterans of Foreign War Post 7597, 314 Idaho Street, will follow the ceremony.

    Salem Township

  • Service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stevenson Cemetery, Cherry Hill Road.

    The Memorial Day service features a flag ceremony by Boy Scout Troop 55, the National Anthem by Commodore Perry High School Band, special music and readings, a veterans salute by Greenville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3374, and more, concluding with Taps..

    Guest speaker for the event is Air Force Lt. Col. M. Duane Hart.
