When Tracey Glover, the officer in charge at the Brookfield Post Office, saw little blond Lyndsey Berecek walk into the post office March 29, she thought a parent had sent her in to buy some stamps.

Instead the 5-year-old said, "My grandmother is passed out."

The preschooler's grandmother, Carolyn Berecek of 6364 Warren Sharon Road, Brookfield, was driving the girl to preschool when she felt ill.

"I'm a diabetic, and I had low blood sugar. I took a couple of glucose tablets but they didn't kick in fast enough," she said.

Mrs. Berecek pulled her sport utility vehicle to the side of the road near Brookfield Center, trying to reassure her granddaughter that everything was OK.

But it didn't take long for Lyndsey to realize that her grandmother was not OK.

That's when she unbuckled her seatbelt, got out of the SUV, looked both ways and crossed Warren Sharon Road to the post office.

"She walked in by herself, and I thought she was going to buy some stamps for her parents," said Ms. Glover, who is now the postmaster in Lake Milton. "She was so calm and told me her grandma was sick. I'm the one who got upset. I said 'What?' and grabbed her by the hand."

The preschooler had pulled open two large glass doors by herself to get into the post office. Ms. Glover let Lyndsey show her where the SUV was, and a patron let her use his cell phone to call 911.

"I opened the door and asked if she (Mrs. Berecek) was OK. She didn't move, but her eyes were still moving so I could tell she was still conscious. She had put her car in park and her foot was smashed against the brake," Ms. Glover said.

The ambulance came for Mrs. Berecek and when asked, Lyndsey told Ms. Glover her mother's full name and the doctor's office where she works.

"She sat in the bosses' chair and twirled around," Ms. Glover said. "Her mother, who works nearby, just dropped everything and flew over here."

On Wednesday, the post office awarded Lyndsey for her bravery, giving her a "Super Hero" plaque, some children's books and some stamp collectibles.

"She's so brave. Can you believe it?" said Ms. Glover.

"We are very proud of her," her grandmother added.
