Strimbu honors top local scholars

Fund awards $18,000 in scholarships

Strimbu Memorial Fund recently awarded more than $18,000 in scholarships to Shenango Valley high school seniors.

The fund is named for the late Nick Strimbu, a Brookfield businessman who died in 1989. He was a leading force behind the development in the Shenango Valley and was known to many as "Uncle Nick."

All the students are in the top 10 percent of their graduating class, took four years of a foreign language, belonged to National Honor Society and were active in community groups as volunteers, tutors and peer leaders.

Most students had part-time jobs and were involved in sports, music, dance and their high school plays. They were class officers, student representatives, leaders of clubs and editors of newspapers and yearbooks.

They were captains of sports teams and some were National Merit scholars or have "Who's Who" recognition.

Danielle Rene Petrozelle, Brookfield High School, was the overall winner and received a $10,000 scholarship. A daughter of Daniel T. and Tina M. Petrozelle, she plans to attend Gannon University, Erie, where she plans to study occupational therapy.

The following students each received $1,000 scholarships:

  • Ericka Lynne Jones, Farrell High School. A daughter of Rudolph and Carol Jones, she plans to attend Slippery Rock University to study education.

  • Michael Luman Stephens, Greenville High School. A son of Dennis and Grace Stephens, he plans to attend Thiel College, Greenville, and study engineering.

  • Allison Leigh Turk, Hickory High School, Hermitage. A daughter of Jeff and Nancy Turk, she plans to attend Ithaca (N.Y.) College, to study occupational therapy.

  • Bryan Michael Galus, Kennedy Catholic High School, Hermitage. A son of Michael and Karen Galus of Mercer, he plans to attend Grove City College and study engineering.

  • Steven Robert Werry, Reynolds High School. A son of Robert and Carol Werry, he plans to attend Grove City College to study engineering.

  • Jennifer Lynn Baum, Sharon High School. A daughter of Edwin and Deanna Baum, she plans to attend Pennsylvania State University's Altoona Campus and study education.

  • Ryan Alan Sobash, Sharpsville High School. A son of Walter and Debbie Sobash, he plans to attend Pennsylvania State University to study meteorology.

  • Katherine Diane Creveling, West Middlesex High School. A daughter of Jeffery and Susan Creveling, she plans to attend Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania and study education.

    Philip Edward Mason, Greenville High School, was named the $500 Angelo and Jennie Mastrian Memorial Fund Essay Winner. A son of Eric and Lida Mason, he plans to attend Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pa., as a predental studies major.
