A Brookfield police lieutenant who resigned Friday was charged Monday afternoon in connection with an April 23 break-in of a trailer at Wyngate Manor Mobile Home Park, police said.

Lt. James Baker of Brookfield was charged with criminal trespass, a fourth-degree misdemeanor, and menacing by stalking, a first-degree misdemeanor.

Baker broke into the home between 8:45 p.m. April 22 and 5:45 a.m. April 23 when the resident was out of town, and a friend who was keeping an eye on the place reported it, said Brookfield Police Chief Dan Faustino.

Evidence found at the scene pointed to Baker, Faustino said, though the chief declined to give details, because it might be used during the court hearing and trial.

Baker allegedly broke down the door, but nothing was taken. The trailer is owned by a "female ex-friend" of Baker's, Faustino said.

Baker, who has been under investigation by the Trumbull County Sheriff's Department since the incident, had worked for the department since December 1992, Faustino said.

Brookfield police are conducting an internal investigation but turned the criminal investigation over to the sheriff's department.

According to assistant Trumbull County prosecutor Chris Becker, Baker could get up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine for the stalking charge and 30 days in jail and a $250 fine for the trespass charge.

Faustino said at Monday's Brookfield Township trustee meeting that they are losing a good officer. "It's always sad anytime you lose an officer through unfortunate circumstances," he said.

Baker wasn't forced to resign and no actions, recommendations or investigations were complete at the time he resigned, Faustino said.
