PSU honors students, staff members at annual convocation

The Shenango Campus of Pennsylvania State University in Sharon held its honors convocation and recognition ceremony in Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166 in Hermitage.

The following students received President's Freshmen awards for holding a grade point average of 4.0 in the first semester of full-time study:

  • Greenville -- Rebecca A. Siders.

  • Hermitage -- Renee M. Morris.

  • Hubbard -- Bonnie Black and Yoande K. Smith

  • Masury -- Martha M. Marmion

  • Sharon -- Cory S. Moore and Patricia J. Popovitch.

  • Sharpsville -- Paula A. Larsen.

    The following received Evan Pugh Scholar awards, given to juniors and seniors in the upper one-half percent of their respective class after 48 or more hours of graded credits:

  • Hermitage -- David A. Lucas, a senior.

  • Sharpsville-- Daniel J. Smith, a senior; and Lori A. Johnson, a junior.

  • Sharon -- James L. Ryan, a junior.

    The following received President Sparks awards, for undergraduate candidates who have earned a GPA of 4.0 based in 36 or more credits:

  • Greenville -- Cheryl L. Runge.

  • Hermitage -- Donald J. Yoest.

  • Sharon -- Rosemaria Cain, Cory S. Moore and James L. Ryan.

    Robert Weber Mathematics awards were given to the most promising math students:

  • Sharon -- George Craig.

  • West Middlesex -- Dawnelle Matjevich.

    The following received League of Women Voters' awards:

  • Farrell -- Merle Woodring.

  • Pulaski -- Sue Dreher.

  • Sharon -- Dave Bailey.

    The following faculty members were recognized for their years of service to the campus:

  • 25 years -- Frank Evans, assistant business administration professor; Kathryn E. Watson, student affairs director, both receiving plaques and Penn State chairs.

  • 18 years -- Alexandra "Sandy" Vansuch, part-time theater instructor, who is leaving the campus to pursue interests including Youngstown State University's Students Motivated by the Arts Program and continued work at the Oakland Center for the Arts in Youngstown.

  • 10 years -- Dr. Pearl Cohen, assistant human development and family studies professor, who will retire at the end of May.

    Freddie Fresh, of Freddie Fresh's in Sharon, received the Student Government Association's Student Appreciation Award given to an individual who contributed and supported student activities.

    Presenters were Dr. Frederic Leeds, acting campus executive officer; Dr. Kevin Berland, honors program coordinator; Bernie Hattjar, occupational therapy program campus coordinator; and Ms. Watson.
