MERCER COUNTY

County libraries put spotlight on summer reading program

Five local libraries are taking part in the statewide "Spotlight on Reading: Be A Star @ Your Library" summer reading program for children.

The program encourages participants to choose their own titles to read for fun. All libraries offer incentives to promote participation. Storytimes, games and craft activities also are included.

The libraries are as follows:

Greenville

The program will be 2 p.m. June 26 through Aug. 7 in Greenville Area Public Library, 330 Main St. Students who have completed kindergarten and older, who have access to a library card, will read books at their own level and pace while attending weekly sessions in the library.

The following event are set:

  • June 26 -- "Celebrate Around the World, Around the Year" musical program by Mainstreet Music of Pittsburgh.

  • July 3 -- "Playing Around in the Theater: Make Believe with Makeup."

  • July 10 -- "Toys from the Past" with Bill Spoonhoward.

  • July 17 -- "Betsy and Friends" puppet show followed by a puppet making party. There will be a cost.

  • July 24 -- "Sensational Snacks for Kids" with Kathy Wenzel. Children will vote on the best chocolate chip cookie in Greenville. Cookbooks also will be compiled.

  • July 31 -- To be announced.

  • Aug. 7 -- Party and mini arts festival for those who have read five or more books.

    Mercer County Family Center also will sponsor a preschool summer reading program in the library.

    Grove City

    The Grove City library also has set children's programs for July and August.

    Bookworm Babies, meeting for three sessions, is designed for children age 3 and younger and their parent or caregiver. First session will be 10 a.m. Mondays, June 10 through July 8; second session, 10 a.m. Mondays, July 15 through Aug. 12; and third session, 7 p.m. Fridays, July 12 through Aug. 16. Registration is needed.

    Story Time, with a weekly theme, will be 10 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays, for 3- through 5-year-olds.

    Bookworm Club, for elementary school-age children, will meet from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesdays. The following themes are set:

  • June 11 -- "Moldable, Foldable, Holdable Art."

  • June 18 -- "A Matter of Taste."

  • June 25 -- "Now Playing."

  • July 2 -- "Get the Beat."

  • July 9 -- "I've Been Framed."

  • July 16 -- "Give Puppets a Hand."

    Farrell

    Sign-up week began Monday in Stey-Nevant Public Library, 1000 Roemer Blvd., Farrell. The program will then run for six weeks, until July 20, during which time children of all ages are expected to read books on their grade level.

    Children visit the library each week to answer questions about the books they have read. Craft project will be added to a mobile in the library. There also will be coloring contests, activity sheets and guess jars.

    Participants who have four crafts attached to their mobile will be invited to a sleepover party July 26. "Library Dollars" will be paid for each completed book, and can be spent at the Sleepover Store.

    Entertainment will be provided by Kevin Delagrange, a professional juggler; and Steve Abrams, a puppeteer from Philadelphia. Free tickets will be available in the library and refreshments will be served.

    Mercer

    Registration is this week for the program in Mercer Area Library, 143 N. Pitt St., where the program is open for those 3 and older.

    The following programs are planned for 10 to 11 a.m.:

  • June 11 -- Kevin Delagrange.

  • June 18 -- Magician Doc Dixon presenting a motivational message about reading.

  • June 25 -- The Wackytime Puppets from the Pittsburgh area.

  • July 2 -- Sheila Craig, a local artist, will present "Releasing Creativity" visual arts program.

  • July 9 -- Nancy Bires, a musician and Hermitage teacher, with "Songs from the Earth."

  • July 16 -- Kathy Wenzel, family living agent with Mercer County Cooperative Extension in Coolspring Township, presenting "Sensational Snacks."

    Other activities are as follows:

  • 1:30 p.m. July 19 -- Steve Abrams giving tips on presenting puppet shows.

  • 5 p.m. July 24 -- Family Picnic in Mercer County 4-H Park. Certificates and prizes will be awarded. Sign-ups are needed.

  • 10 a.m. July 26 -- "Reading at the Library" with WKBN News personnel reading to children.

    Sign-up in Grove City Community Library, 125 W. Main St.

    To successfully complete the program, children 3 and older will be given a reading log in which they must record the titles of 20 books they have read or had read to them. They also will receive a bookmark and plastic bag. All logs, with recorded books, must turned in by July 26.

    Those who have read the required number of books will receive a reading certificate and have a new book placed on the library's shelves in their honor. Participants should be members of the library.

    Sharon

    A program for preschool through fifth-graders will be June 10 through July 26 in Shenango Valley Community Library, 11 N. Sharpsville Ave., Sharon. Those who read, or have read to them, five books each week will earn a prize. Those who register the week of June 10 will be given a reading log to record the titles.

    The following programs are planned:

  • Kevin Delagrange -- 2 p.m. June 11.

  • Tiny Stars story time -- 11 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays, for 2 and 3-year-olds accompanied by an adult.

  • Little Stars story time -- 1 to 1:45 p.m. Tuesdays and 11 to 11:45 a.m. and 1:30 to 2:15 p.m., for those age 3 through the completion of kindergarten.

    First- through fifth-graders can take part in "The General Admission" programs:

  • Origami -- 11 to 11:45 a.m. June 20.

  • Fun with Food -- 11 a.m. to noon June 28.

  • Wackytime Puppets -- 11 to 11:45 a.m. July 11, registration is needed for the program for all ages.

  • Drawing with Dale McFarland -- 10 a.m. to noon or 1 to 3 p.m. July 18.

    The closing program will be July 27. Those who arrive at 10:30 a.m. can audition for a part in the 11 a.m. production of Pauline Faneuf's "Fairytaler."

    Registration will be June 10 through 14 for "The General Admission" and storytime programs.
