Local students headed to governor's schools

Nine local students have been selected to attend Pennsylvania Governor's Schools of Excellence this summer.

Three students will attend the Governor's School for the Arts at Mercyhurst College in Erie. Jason Solomon of Greenville High School will study theater and Daniel Byerly of Sharon High School and Courtney McNeely of Wilmington High School will study music.

Chosen as alternates were: Ann Hines and Amanda Jaskowak, both of Grove City High School, to study creative writing; Nicole Suhrie of Mercer High School for visual arts; and Nicole White of West Middlesex High for creative writing.

Three students will attend the Governor's School for Information Technology, hosted by Drexel University in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania State University. Scott Jacobs and Andrew McLean are Grove City High School students and Caleb Astey attends Sharon High.

Leah Acker of Mercer High will attend the Governor's School for the Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Cassandra Buckwalter of Wilmington High has been chosen for the Governor's School for Teaching at Millersville (Pa.) University. Shelly Stevenson of Grove City High was named an alternate.

Joan Watson of Greenville High, Nicole Cochran of Lakeview High and Kathryn Barszczowski of Rhema Christian Academy in Wilmington Township were chosen as alternates to the School for the Agricultural Sciences at Pennsylvania State University, State College.

Leah Acker of Mercer High was chosen for International Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Marcus Smith of Wilmington High is an alternate.

Chosen as alternates to attend the Governor's School for the Health Care Professions at the University of Pittsburgh were Amanda Jones of Greenville High and Meghan Donovan of Slippery Rock High.

Sophomores and juniors who demonstrate artistic or academic talent may apply for the residential programs, which take place for five weeks during the summer on college campuses.
