ERASE to raise funds

ERASE officials are hoping to get various committees within the organization functioning, especially in the fund-raising and youth areas.

The anti-drug coalition met Monday and discussed the need to have fund-raisers. Yolanda Cooper, ERASE coordinator, said the coalition needs to have at least one fund-raiser a year. An attempt last year failed because of lack of support with the coalition, she said.

Ms. Cooper said fund raising could start off with a small goal of $1,500 and that goal could increase each year. She said fund raising will help to increase activity in the Youth in Education committee.

The number of youth active in ERASE has increased from 10 to 77 in just three years, Ms. Cooper said. Each week between 25 to 30 young people visit the ERASE office at 901 Fruit Ave., she said. Ms. Cooper added that it's important to have a functioning youth committee to create more programs for the youth.

In addition to raising money for the youth program, Ms. Cooper said it would also be helpful to have extra money to send coalition members to a conference or workshop.

Olive Brown, executive director of ERASE, said the coalition will distribute posters to let people know about ERASE.

ERASE members also elected new officers. The chairperson will be Rev. Geraldine Williams and the co-chairperson will be Marcia L. Gregory. Deborah S. Pate will act as secretary and Michaelene Gula will be the treasurer.
