Ramp, Preston win PSU Shenango accolades

Shenango Campus of Pennsylvania State University, Sharon, announced the winners of two awards.

Becky Ramp, Greenville, received the Eric A. and Josephine Walker Award. Kimberly Preston, Sharon, earned the Outstanding Adult Student Award.

The accolade given to Ms. Ramp recognizes students who have directed their outstanding character, scholarship, leadership and citizenship into programs and services to positively influence fellow students.

The 1996 Commodore Perry High School alumna began taking classes in the fall of 1999 at the Penn State-Shenango. She graduated n 2001 from the campus with an associate's degree in human development and family studies.

Ms. Ramp is continuing her education at the campus and in the fall will be a junior elementary education major. She plans to transfer in the fall of 2003 to Slippery Rock University.

This year, Ms. Ramp was representative-at-large for the Student Government Association, of which she will be president in the fall. She is active in groups benefiting children with cancer at Penn State University Children's Hospital, The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Ms. Ramp also is a member of the Human Development and Family Studies Club, where she has served as secretary.

She has received the 2001-2002 Penn State Shenango Joy Cone Scholarship. Ms. Ramp was employed by Joy Cone Co. for one year and was an AmeriCorps member this past summer, working with children in an educational and recreational setting.

She is a receptionist at Cost Cutters in Hermitage and tutors grade school children.

Ms. Preston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Preston of Sharon, began as a part-time student on the campus. She graduated in 2001 from the Shenango Campus. She plans to graduate in May 2003 with a bachelor's degree in human development and family studies.

The Human Development and Family Studies Club's president was selected as Student Government Association's activities coordinator for the upcoming academic year. She was co-chair in 2001 of the Women's Forum.

Ms. Preston, who has worked full-time for more than 14 years at Delphi Packard Electric Systems, attends classes in the evening After earning a bachelor's degree, she plans to work on a master's degree and hopes to work in social policy and legislation for the elderly.

Ms. Ramp and Ms. Preston were recognized by the Shenango Campus advisory board. Ms. Ramp was presented a medallion; and Ms. Preston, a plaque. Both received a $300 award.
