SHARPSVILLE

Condemned lot may get new life

A condemned lot on Walnut Street in Sharpsville may soon become a parking area.

Council voted Wednesday to condemn a house located at 32 Walnut Street, across from the borough municipal building.

Plans are to build a parking lot in its place in conjunction with the Mercer County Regional Council of Governments program to build "comfort station" bus stops on the Shenango Valley Shuttle Service line, said Borough Manager Michael Wilson. Sharpsville's station would be located at the front of the parking lot, he said.

Wilson and Council President Jack Cardwell said council has requested a borough parking study from the Mercer County Regional Planning Commission, not only for the proposed parking lot but also for businesses in the Walnut Street area. Wilson met with commission about parking Wednesday.

"It is imperative that the regional planning commission act on our request pronto," Cardwell said. "We'd appreciate some kind of answer from them next month."
