Big band, Broadway and more on horizon

Here's the schedule for the Mercer Community Band's 25th season.

All concerts are at the Hendley Hoge Bandstand at the Mercer County Courthouse in Mercer, except for the Buhl show.

Also excepting the Buhl show, an ice cream social is held at each concert, from 6 to 9 p.m., and warm-up entertainers hit the stage at 6:15 p.m. The main concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

If it rains, concerts are held at Mercer Area High School. Farrell Area High School is the rain site for the July 7 concert.

  • The band plays a concert with a big band theme June 21. Patty Norris will be guest vocalist. Accordion player Johnny Oakes will warm up the crowd, and outdoorsman Trapper John will be on hand.

  • The band plays "Broadway Showstoppers" June 28, with Connie Cassidy and Stephanie Holt of New Castle Playhouse singing selections from "Guys and Dolls," which the playhouse is preparing to stage, and instrumental soloist George Miklas, who plays harmonica. The gospel group the Keeling Family will open.

  • The band marks Independence Day with a July 5 concert titled "Red, White and Blue." James Depew will be guest vocalist, and Dr. Grover

Pitman, a French horn player, will be instrumental soloist. One-man band Jim Hutchinson opens.

  • The band moves to Buhl Farm park, Hermitage, for its July 7 concert, which starts at 6 p.m. Soprano Joni McFarland and trumpeter Andy Erb will be guests.

  • The Harrisville Community Band holds down the fort for the July 12 show. Folk singer and guitarist Pam Courtney will open.

  • Mercer Community Band returns for a Victorian theme concert July 19 that coincides with Mercer's Victorian Weekend. Dr. Misook Yun, a soprano, and trumpeter Joseph Pisano also will perform. Acoustic Fish opens.

  • The band plays for its 25th anniversary concert July 26. The show will feature Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture," and the premiere of "The Courthouse Square March," a piece the band commissioned from Dr. Michael Martin. Baritone David Hamilton and flutist Stacey Steele will be featured, and the Penn-Ohio Singers will open the concert.

  • Youngstown Community Band is set to take the Aug. 2 show. Fred Boles Quintet opens with arrangements of big band pieces.

  • Mercer County Jamboree, a collective of local bluegrass, folk and gospel performers, closes the season Aug. 9.
