Musicians' band, singers present 'Grand Night'

Musicians' Concert Band will opens its summer concert series with a show called "It's a Grand Night for Singing" at 8 p.m. June 21 in Miller Auditorium, Slippery Rock University.

The 100-member band is directed by Blase Scarnati, professor-emeritus at SRU. He founded the band in 1986.

The first show will feature guest soloist Kimberly Steinhauer, a recent finalist in the Marvin Hamlisch "Search for the Stars" program in Pittsburgh. She also was a featured singer at the Voice Foundation Gala in Philadelphia.

Robert Ficca, retired from Butler School District, will be guest conductor. He also has performed with the 113th Army Band, the Butler County Symphony Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

The concert will feature songs such as "Accolada," "How Great Thou Art," and "Jolly Walk in Hibbertland," and three Gershwin tunes.

Other concerts:

  • "Memories are Made of This," 8 p.m. July 11.

  • "An Evening With Warren Baker," featuring composer Warren Baker, 8 p.m. July 25.

  • "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave," 8 p.m. Aug. 8.

    The band also will perform "Hodgepodge: A Little Bit of This and a Little Bit of That" at 4 p.m. July 21 at Barrow Civic-Theater, Franklin.

    The band's annual holiday show, called "Dear Santa," will be held at 4 p.m. Dec. 8 in Miller Auditorium.
