Allegheny musicians set inaugural season

Allegheny College, Meadville, has set the schedule for its inaugural Summer Music Festival.

The festival Saturday through June 24 will focus on ensemble playing with Allegheny instructors and internationally known performers acting as faculty.

Performers young and old will take part in coaching sessions, ensemble practices, master classes and concerts.

The festival concert series features:

  • Cavani String Quartet and pianist Alec Chien playing romantic chamber music, 3 p.m. Sunday in Henderson Campus Center.

  • Soprano Josephine Mongiardo and pianist Kenneth Cooper performing 19th-century love songs, 8 p.m. Monday in Henderson Campus Center.

  • The Summer Winds, featuring faculty members flutist Therese Wacker, oboist Robyn Dixon Costa, clarinetist Anthony J. Costa, bassoonist Julie Ferguson and French horn player Ronald Friedman playing works by Ibert, Persichetti and Joplin, 8 p.m. Tuesday in Brooks Hall.

  • Cavani String Quartet with Cooper and Ms. Mongiardo performing works by Joaquin Turina, Manuel de Falla and Schumann, 8 p.m. Wednesday in Henderson Campus Center.

  • Cooper, Cavani String Quartet, Cleveland Orchestra flutist Mary Kay Fink, trumpeter Neil Mueller and fortepianist Beth Etter playing works by Vivaldi, Telemann, Boccherini and Bach, 8 p.m. June 21 in Henderson Campus Center.

  • Faculty musicians playing Beethoven chamber music and American popular songs from the turn of the 20th century, 8 p.m. June 22 in Shafer Auditorium.

  • Organist Cameron Carpenter playing works by Bach, Walton and Sowerby, and an improvisation based on themes suggested by the audience, 8 p.m. June 23 in Ford Chapel.

    Free shows set:

  • Harpist Grace Cloutier, a student at the Juilliard School, 12:20 p.m. Tuesday in the art galleries of Doane Hall.

  • Festival ensembles and the Erie Renaissance Singers, 8 p.m. June 20 in Henderson Campus Center.

  • Student performers, 10:30 a.m. June 22 in Brooks Dining Hall.

  • Elementary musicians, 2 p.m. June 23 in Arter Hall.

    Cavani String Quartet also will offer a concert for families of children signed up for the summer reading program at Crawford County libraries. Show your reading badge for admission to the 4 p.m. Saturday concert in Shafer Auditorium. Attendees also are invited to an arts program at 3 p.m. in Henderson Campus Center lobby, and a picnic at 5 p.m. on the Henderson lawn.
