FARRELL

Juneteenth

celebration is slated Saturday

The fifth annual Juneteenth celebration will be held Saturday in Farrell.

A gospel celebration will begin at noon in Veteran's Square with a welcome from Farrell Mayor William Morocco, a news release said. Throughout the day there will be entertainment including singing, dancing, mimes and tribute readings.

Various vendors will be set up in booths with food and information. Games will be provided by the Prince of Peace Center and the Greater Mount Zion CoGiC Youth Department.

According to information from the Minority Health Coalition, Juneteenth is the oldest black holiday. It began June 19, 1865, when word of freedom finally reached the slaves in Texas, almost 2 1/2 years after slavery was abolished.

On April 10, 1997, the United States adopted legislation officially recognizing June 19 as Juneteenth Independence Day.
