Park festival raises $513
for distressed community

The Greenville Area Preservation Association held a Riverside Park Festival last weekend to raise funds for the community and boost residents' morale in light of the town's debt. The festival raised $513 after expenses, organizers said.

Despite poor weekend weather, the festival brought out quite a crowd, said event spokeswoman Lorrie Smith.

"Attendees, vendors - everyone had a good time. We were wet, but we were smiling," Ms. Smith said. "All that came felt it was a good idea and wanted us (the GAPA) to hold more of the same."

The event included booths from local businesses, doctors' offices, crafters and food vendors. There was also an inflated jumping house for children and face painting.

Windy Burrows, 79, attended the event with his wagon and ponies to give rides.

The GAPA thanked those who participated, including police and fire departments, community crime watch members and Stat Medevec helicopter crew for making the festival run smoothly.

Last month the borough was designated a financially distressed community under the state's Act 47 program. It began the year with more than a $1 million deficit and auditors estimated the deficit would balloon to more than $2.7 million by the end of the year.
