Farmers Market program helps the county's low-income seniors

County Mercer Area Agency on Aging, Inc., in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Food Distribution, is offering the Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) again this summer to older adults residing in Mercer County. The Farmers Market nutrition Program provides $20 in checks to eligible older persons to encourage them to purchase and consume fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers markets. The program also seeks to stimulate the production of fruits and vegetables by local growers who make their produce available at farmers markets.

Adults, 60 and older, residing in Mercer County and who have a gross income at or below $16,391 for a single person or $22,089 for a couple, are eligible to participate in the FMNP. Proof of age and residency is required (drivers license, photo ID, etc.). Checks and farmers market information will be available at the following times and locations:

Shenango Valley (for residents of Sharon, Farrell, Wheatland, West Middlesex, Sharpsville, Hermitage and adjacent townships)

   » 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at Shenango Valley Center of Aging & Geriatric Health, 220 N. Buhl Farm Drive, Hermitage. The center will be closed July 4. Information: (724) 981-7950.

Greenville (Greenville, Jamestown, Reynolds and adjacent townships)

   » 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 9 at Greenville Knights of Columbus, Route 18, 170 Clarksville St., Greenville.

   » 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning July 10 at Greenville Area Senior Community Center, 339 E. Jamestown Road (Keifer Building). Information: (724) 588-3155.

Grove City (and adjacent townships)

   » 1 to 4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays at Grove City Senior Community Center, 301 S. Broad St., in Collegeview Towers. Information: (724) 458-6844.

Sandy Lake/Stoneboro (Sandy Lake, Stoneboro, Jackson Center and adjacent townships)

   » 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning this Tuesday at McQuiston Center by the Park, 29 Railroad St., Sandy Lake. The center will be closed July 4. Information: (724) 376-3608.

Mercer (and adjacent townships)

   » 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at Mercer County Area Agency on Aging, Inc., Administrative Office, 133 N. Pitt St., Mercer. The center will be closed July 4. Information: (724) 662-6222 or (800) 570-6222.
