Butler teacher facing charges fired
BUTLER (AP) -- A school board has fired a science teacher facing trial on charges that he possessed heroin and was driving under the influence of the drug.
Stephen Burda, 40, of Butler, was charged after he was pulled over by police who said he was driving erratically in Evans City on Dec. 7.
The Butler Area School District initially suspended Burda with pay, but suspended him without pay on Jan. 9.
A district justice ruled in February that prosecutors have enough evidence for Burda to stand trial.
Several packets of heroin, plus an open plastic bag with heroin residue, were found in Burda's car, police said.
A passenger in Burda's car, Jennifer Kwiatek, 26, pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia. She was fined $50 plus court costs.
