Boy who was shot remains hospitalized

A Wilmington Township, Mercer County, boy who was shot Monday evening behind his home is still in guarded but stable condition, according to a hospital spokesperson at the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System.

Samuel A. Campbell, 6, of Bethel-New Wilmington Road, was shot in his side while helping his father John Campbell put up a fence in a pasture, according to Regis Senko, information education supervisor for the state Game Commission's northwest region.

Senko said the shot was fired by Jesse Morgan, 81, of New Castle, who said he shot at a groundhog. Senko wouldn't say how they connected the .22 caliber bullet with Morgan's rifle because the commission is still investigating the incident.

He said that statistically there are very few of these kinds of shootings in the region or state in the course of a year.

As of this morning, no citation had been issued against Morgan, according to the commission's Federal Aid Supervisor Pat Anderson.
