Herald columnist
on History Channel

Wally Wachter, retired managing editor of The Herald, will be featured at 10 p.m. Tuesday on the History Channel in a series called Sex and World War II: "The Pacific Front."

Wachter, 83, of Hermitage, who writes a weekly column for the newspaper, will appear in the first part of the three-part series, which explores how interpersonal and sexual relations were transformed on the Pacific front, European front and Home front, according to the History Channel. Veterans and historians will share their personal stories on issues that have had lasting effects on America's social history.

"The Pacific Front" highlights what is believed to be the busiest red light district of the Pacific theater, an area with a high concentration of servicemen. It will re-air at 2 a.m. Wednesday. The three-part series also features "The European Front" at 10 p.m. Wednesday and "The Home Front" at 10 p.m. Thursday, which focuses on the United States. The series was produced by Greystone Communications Inc., primary producers of history programs for the History Channel and A&E.

Wachter served in the Army during World War II in Honolulu from early 1942 through October 1945. While in Honolulu in 1942, he became associate editor of a tabloid newspaper called "The Midpacifician" two months after its first publication. He remained associate editor after the tabloid became a daily paper and changed its name to "Pacific Stars and Stripes." He worked alongside a columnist named Hotel Street Harry, who wrote about Honolulu's red light district. In a search for Hotel Street Harry, the History Channel contacted Wachter for Harry's whereabouts. Ultimately Wachter was invited to be interviewed at the U.S. Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force base in Dayton, Ohio.

Wachter retired from the Herald in June 1983. He was written weekly columns for The Herald since then. He and his wife, Katherine, have three children and four grandchildren.
