'Purposeful'
activity up
in cities,
police say

Weed and Seed special police patrols in Farrell and Sharon noted street activity picked up in June from previous months, but it has been lawful.

Mercer County Assistant District Attorney Robert Kochems, Weed and Seed law enforcement coordinator, said police called the activity "moving and purposeful and not just idling or hanging out."

Police made 384 hours of patrols in June, he said, including 63 traffic stops.

The patrols made felony arrests for aggravated assault and auto theft and six misdemeanor drug possession or drug paraphernalia arrests, served nine warrants and issued seven citations.

Citizen contacts included bar walkthroughs, investigations of suspicious activity reports and warrant service attempts.

Police made 21 extended foot patrols, which included playing catch and jumping rope with children, and engaging adults in discussions about graduation and family reunions. The patrols also gave out information on fireworks laws and curfews.
