Seeking man in car theft, police say

Two of the three men who stole a car from a woman in Sharon were in police custody this morning but a third man was still at large, police said.

The incident started just after 8 p.m. when three men went to a woman's home in the 800 block of Spearman Avenue and asked to borrow her car, police said. The woman refused and one of the men pulled out a knife and threatened to slit her throat, police said. The men then went through her purse, found her keys and two of the men drove off in the car, police said.

When police arrived, they said, they found Clifford M. Grear, 52, of 318 Adams St., Farrell, still at the scene. Grear was charged with robbery and criminal conspiracy to commit robbery, police said.

Sharon police spotted the car around 11 p.m. at Quinby Street and Wallis Avenue and followed it into Farrell. Two men in the car bailed out, and police caught Robert Spruill, Jr., 18, of 1113 Hamilton Ave., Farrell, police said. The other man got away, police said.

Spruill had a .25-caliber automatic pistol that was reported stolen from Los Angeles, police said.

Mercer County Southwest Regional Police charged him with receiving stolen property, possession of a firearm without a license and a probation violation.

Grear was arraigned before District Justice James E. McMahon, Sharon, and taken to Mercer County Jail after failing to post $2,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is set for noon July 18. Spruill was to be arraigned this morning before District Justice Henry J. Russo, Hermitage.
