Hugh M. O'Neill Decorated war vet was WE retiree, Mason, swim teacher A funeral service will be held Friday for Hugh M. O'Neill, 2206 Downing Lane, Hermitage. He died at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2002, in his residence after an extended illness. He was 84. Mr. O'Neill was born Aug. 21, 1917, in New Castle to Hugh O'Neill and Margaret Patton O'Neill. He retired from the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he was a press operator for 40 years. Mr. O'Neill was a member of East Side Church (Baptist-Disciples of Christ), Sharon. A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II, earning the Victory Medal, Purple Heart, American Mideastern Medal, Rifleman's Badge and Expert Rifle Medal. Mr. O'Neill belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599, Reynolds; Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 810, Hermitage; and Scottish Rites New Castle Consistory. He was a Red Cross Water Safety instructor. His first wife, the former Eloise Hickey, died March 17, 1981. Surviving are: his second wife, the former Caroline Springer, whom he married Oct. 23, 1987, at home; one daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Judith) Woods, Nashville, Tenn.; five stepdaughters, Mrs. William (Shirley) Darby and Mrs. Steve (Debbie) Shaw, both Reynolds; Mrs. Doug (Jodi) DeTal and Mrs. Mark (Railynn) Rupert, both Sharon; and Pam Springer, Hermitage; three stepsons, James and his wife Erla Springer, Hermitage; Danny and his wife Sue Springer; and Donald and his wife Ava Springer, all Reynolds; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Charles (Doris) Ruby; and two brothers, William Hartzell and Donald Hartzell, all Pulaski. Besides his first wife, Mr. O'Neill was preceded in death by a son, Benjamin; an infant grandson; two brothers, Chester and Paul Hartzell; and two sisters, Margaret and Janet Hartzell. O'NEILL Emma L. Hagarman Homemaker was active in St. Michael's in Greenville Emma L. Hagarman, 80 N. Third St., Greenville, died at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2002, in the skilled care unit of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 98. Mrs. Hagarman was born Dec. 22, 1903, in St. Joseph, Ohio, to Leonard Rieger and Magdalena Horning Rieger. She was a homemaker. As a member of St. Michael's Church in Greenville, Mrs. Hagarman belonged to the Altar Rosary Society; and the Infant of Prague Guild; sewed for the Medical Missions; and helped with the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine program. She enjoyed sewing, baking, gardening and tending to her roses. Her husband, Roy A. Hagarman, whom she married Jan. 22, 1924, in St. Aloysius Church in Strausburg, Ohio, died June 11, 1987. Surviving are: three daughters, Catherine Saunier, Canton, Ohio; Elizabeth Day, North Canton, Ohio; and Barbara McHale, Greenville; two sons, Edward J. Hagarman, Dover, Ohio; and Carl A. Hagarman, Masury; 19 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Hagarman was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Paul O. Hagarman; four sisters; eight brothers; and two grandsons, Gary and Donald Saunier. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael's School Endowment Fund, 85 N. High St., Greenville 16125.
HAGARMAN Harry Albert Smith WWII Army vet of Sharon was longtime truck driver Harry Albert Smith of 482 Logan Ave., Sharon, passed away at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2002, in his residence after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was 86. Born Sept. 10, 1915, in Tyrone, Blair County, Pa., Mr. Smith was a son of the late Albert and Betty Pearl Johnson Smith. He attended schools in Glazierville, Pa., and was a professional truck driver for most of his life. He was most recently employed for more than 11 years at what is now Warner-Continental Trucking, the former Hall's Motor Express in Wheatland. Previously he was employed by the former Chicago Express based in New Jersey and the former McLean Trucking in Indianapolis, Ind. At one time, Mr. Smith was also on the tip staff of the Blair County Court House in Hollidaysburg, Pa. A U.S. Army World War II veteran, he achieved the rank of sergeant and participated in the Normandy invasion, landing on Omaha Beach. As a child, he worked alongside his father on the family's dairy farm and was an animal enthusiast. Harry was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post Hickory 6166, Hermitage; as well as Post 8860, Masury; and American Legion posts 299, Sharon; and 432, Wheatland. At one time, he was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 250, Sharon. Survivors include: his wife, the former Margaret Jean McNally, at home; three daughters, Mrs. Frank (Tawny) Smith, Greenville; Mrs. Terry (Michelle) Rogan, Spartansburg, Crawford County; and Mrs. Walter (Sue Ellen) Fellner, Hermitage; three sons, Richard C. Nale, Australia; Danny Allen Nale, Virginia; and Harry Albert "Hup" Smith II, Farrell; one sister, Betty, Altoona, Pa.; 22 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
