A 30-year-old Sharon woman who said she was raped in June admitted Friday in court to drinking alcohol and smoking crack-cocaine at a friend's house prior to the incident.

All charges against the man accused of raping her, William L. Taylor, 38, of 615 Wallis Ave., Farrell, were held to court Friday after the woman and her friend testified at a preliminary hearing before District Justice Henry J. Russo, Hermitage. Taylor will face charges of rape, aggravated assault, making terroristic threats, kidnapping and indecent assault in Mercer County Common Pleas Court.

Taylor's attorney, William McConnell of Sharon, focused on the woman's drug use during his cross examination, bluntly asking her at one point: "Are you a crackhead?"

The woman said she had been drinking alcohol at about 8 p.m. June 22 at her brother's home in Brookfield. She also admitted to smoking crack-cocaine and drinking again later on at about 2:30 a.m. at her friend Charlotte Alston's house. However, she said she was sober when she left to walk home at 5:45 a.m. and was approached by Taylor.

The woman said she was walking from Ms. Alston's house on Quinby Street toward New Castle Road when Taylor approached her in his car and offered her a ride to her home a block away.

She said Taylor recognized her from the Blue Ribbon Grille, Farrell, where she once worked as a dancer. Though she didn't recognize him, she said she got into his car assuming he knew her.

She said Taylor was driving in the wrong direction and she told him about it. He said if she didn't feel comfortable she could get out at anytime, the woman testified. When she tried to get out near the Sharon-Farrell border, she said he locked the car's doors.

While he was driving, the woman said Taylor noticed several police cars on George Street in Sharon and grabbed her arm and told her: "Don't make a scene," and "I have a gun don't make me use it."

She said Taylor eventually drove to Wheatland where he turned off Council Avenue near some railroad tracks. The woman testified that Taylor raped her on a dirt road by a building near a stretch of barbed wire fence. She said she tried to break free several times and Taylor bit her on the wrist and face.

Afterward, she said she was going to walk home, but Taylor told her he felt bad. She said he offered her money and a ride back. She said he then dropped her off on the corner of Quinby and New Castle where he picked her up.

Ms. Alston testified that she was with the alleged victim before the incident, and that she saw a car drop her off on the corner by her house. She said she didn't have a phone to call police and warned the woman not to wash her hands or clean up. Ms. Alston said the woman left to call police from home.

The woman said her boyfriend drove her to UPMC Horizon, Farrell, where she was treated at 6:50 a.m.

Taylor was arrested at 12:30 p.m. June 23 at home.

Taylor was released on $10,000 bond on the condition that he have no contact with the victim or witnesses.
