14 hurt when firework falls
on crowd enjoying Founders Day

Fireworks marking Hubbard's Founders Day celebration injured 14 people Sunday night, according to Ken Mauch, assistant Hubbard fire chief.

Twelve people were treated at local hospitals, Mauch said. One person was admitted to the burn unit at Akron Children's Hospital and another to Saint Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, he said.

At 10:51 p.m. Sunday, a firework was shot off and apparently fell into the crowd watching the display at Harding Park, Mauch said. The display was halted immediately and ambulances from Hubbard and Brookfield fire departments carried away the injured.

Witnesses said they saw a bright light about a yard off the ground near the injured parties' blankets. A 5-foot-high fence separated the fireworks display and the crowd, leading the witnesses to believe the firework fell from above.

Hubbard Mayor George Praznik, whose office sponsors the Founder's Day celebration, could not be reached for comment.

Ohio State Fire Marshall Dave Schroeder said his department is beginning a preliminary investigation. Schroeder said they will make sure all Ohio state revised codes for fireworks displays were followed by the American Fireworks Company of Ohio, which put on the display. They will also be interviewing witnesses to discover exactly what occurred, he said.

American Fireworks Company owner Van Burnett said today he had no comment.

Fireworks that were set up but not exploded after the accident Sunday were fired off at 7:30 a.m. today.
