MERCER COUNTY

Political parties elect officers

Mercer County Republican and Democratic political committees recently reorganized, and six of the top eight office-holders in the parties were re-appointed.

The highest-ranking newcomer is the Rev. Donald P. Wilson of Lackawannock Township, who was appointed to a two-year term as chairman of the Mercer County GOP committee. Wilson, who succeeds former chairman Dr. David O. King, was unopposed.

"9/11 made me realize that no one can sit on the sidelines anymore," said Rev. Wilson, a former longtime West Middlesex Area School Board member and pastor of Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Lackawannock Township.

"I'm not going to be a flamboyant chairman out to grab headlines for myself. My objective is to strengthen the party and to find the best candidates and work to get them elected," Rev. Wilson added.

The GOP board is rounded out by Assistant Chairwoman Ann Coleman of Hermitage, Secretary Virginia "Ginny" Steese Richardson of Pine Township and Treasurer Elliott Lengel of Findley Township. All have served for two years.

Of Rev. Wilson, Mrs. Coleman said, "We were looking for a strong chairman who would be able to unify the party and someone who has been involved for many years. He wants to be very inclusive and bring everyone together."

On the Democratic side, Robert F. Lark of West Middlesex was reappointed to a four-year term. Lark, who has headed the committee since 1988, is the longest-serving chairman in the history of the committee.

Betty Marshall of Farrell remains vice chairwoman and Alma J. Kovach of Sharpsville remains treasurer. The lone newcomer on the Democratic committee is Mona Morton of Sharon, who replaces Mercer County Commissioner Olivia M. Lazor as secretary. Mrs. Lazor chose not to seek another four-year term.
