Jay C. Busciglio

Nuclear engineer, powerboat expert had family here

KINGWOOD, Texas -- Jay C. Busciglio, Kingwood, passed away at his home July 20, 2002, after a short and courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was born in Alessandria D. Rocca, Sicily, Italy, but called Tampa, Fla., his home until settling in Farrell.

Jay lived life to the fullest as a nuclear engineer, offshore boat racer, pilot, teacher, husband and friend.

Jay earned three degrees in engineering, including a master's degree in nuclear engineering, and he was instrumental in opening power and chemical plants throughout Texas and Louisiana.

Jay then went on to devote his time to power of another kind: powerboat racing. Jay had an extensive background in offshore racing and in selling high performance powerboats throughout the world, doing business as Jay Busciglio's Hi-Performance Center.

He was instrumental in forming and participating in several race teams, and was on the local OPBRA Club board of directors.

He used his expertise in boat racing to train U.S. Customs in working with high-performance boats. Jay also served as offshore editor for Wateways Magazine and as contributing writer for Nautical Quarterly. Through his years of racing, Jay called South Florida home.

Jay and his wife, Charlene, moved to Kingwood in 1999 so that Charlene could pursue her career with Continental Airlines and Neat Group. Jay served as adjunct professor in international business at Kingwood College while continuing with his hi-performance business.

Jay is survived by his wife, Charlene Marsh, originally of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; his father, Joseph Busciglio, Farrell; his sisters and their families, all of the Sharon area -- Angie LoScalzo and her husband Phillip and their two children, Phillip LoScalzo Jr. and Linda Lucas; and Mary Conti and her husband Don and their two children, Gregory Conti and Donna Miller; along with his uncle Joe Frisco and his wife Nina, Sicily, Italy; and numerous cousins in Italy.

Edward 'Ed' G. Repass

Ex-Franklin man had share of Jackson Center store

Edward "Ed" G. Repass, 55, formerly of Franklin, died peacefully in the home of his sister and brother-in-law in Front Royal, Va., on July 21, 2002.

Born in Pulaski, Va., he was the son of James H. and Ethel M. Melvin Repass.

Ed was part owner and operator of Keystone Junction Store in Jackson Center.

Ed is survived by his mother and stepfather, Ethel and Floyd Jones, Bealton, Va. He is also survived by two sons, Eric and Barry Repass. Also surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Laura Repass, Warrenton, Va.; and sisters and brothers-in-law Dorothy and Jim Sanborn, Amissville, Va.; and Ann and Lamont Orndorff, Front Royal. He is also survived by four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to "Angel Flight," 4620 Haygood Road, Suite 1, Virginia Beach, Va. 23455. This organization was kind enough to fly Ed home to Virginia at no cost when he was too sick to travel by car.

Donations may also be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, Va. 22601, who provided him with excellent care from the day he arrived in Virginia.

Burial will be in Robinette Cemetery, Laurel, Va.

Louise Grace Elia Patt

Ex-Patt's Fashions owner_was chamber past president


Louise Grace Elia Patt, Countryside Convalescent Home, East Lackawannock Township, passed away at 7:30 p.m. Monday (7-22-02) in the nursing home. She was 80.

Mrs. Patt was born Oct. 25, 1921, in Farrell to Lewis and Margaret Esposito Elia.
The 1938 alumna of Farrell High School in 1954 opened a clothing business, Patt's Fashions, in Farrell. The business was moved to Sharon in 1958 and then to Hermitage, first in the Hickory Plaza and later to the Shenango Valley Mall. She sold the business in 1979.

She moved to Wilmington, Del., in 1980 and co-owned and operated Village Fountain at Independence Square until 1984. She was last employed at Joel's, a woman's clothing store in West Chester, Pa., until retiring in 1994.
Mrs. Patt was a former member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Farrell and attended the Church of Notre Dame in Hermitage. She was a member and past president of the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Her husband, Francis James Patt Jr., whom she married in 1948, died in April 1954.
Surviving are: one son, Francis "Fran" J. Patt III and his wife, Susan, Exton, Pa.; three sisters, Elizabeth O'Hare, Sharon; Mrs. Anthony V. (Marguerite) Duich, Hermitage; and Mrs. Albert (Geraldine) Tate, Hermitage; three brothers, Raymond Elia and his wife, Mary, Landenberg, Pa.; James Elia, Farrell; and Robert Elia, Hermitage; and three grandchildren, Nathan, Amy and Alyssa Patt.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Thomas Merat

Navy retiree was active_in Good Shepherd, VFW

A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, July 24, 2002, for Thomas Merat, formerly of 267 McClure Ave., Sharon. He passed away at 7:50 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 2002, in Autumn Hills Nursing Homes, Niles, Ohio, after a long illness. He was 74.

Born March 14, 1928, in Sharon, he was a son of Margaret Hether Merat and the late Thomas A. Merat.

After graduating from Sharpsville High School in 1946, Mr. Merat entered the United States Navy, from which he retired with the rank of Chief Yeoman in 1976 after 30 years of service. He then became a member of the United States Navy Fleet Reserve.

Following his retirement, he decided to further his education, graduating first from the Shenango Campus of Pennsylvania State University in Sharon with an associate's degree in business administration in 1979 and then from Youngstown State University with a bachelor of science degree in accounting in June 1982.

Thomas was a member of Church of the Good Shepherd, West Middlesex. There, he was a former Confraternity of Christian Doctrine teacher, lector, Eucharistic minister and also served on the church's finance committee. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286, Farrell, serving as quartermaster for several years. He also held membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166 Public Golf Course, Hermitage.

A very avid sports fan, he was an ardent Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns fan. He also enjoyed bowling with the Farrell Post Office League and the VFW League. His love of sports prompted him to obtain a professional umpire's license. He officiated several university and professional-level softball games. Thomas also enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, the former Chieko H. Hirano, whom he married May 6, 1953, in Tokyo, Japan; his mother, who resides in John XXIII Home, Hermitage; three sisters, Regina DeGerolamo and Mrs. Thomas (Margie) Laberty, both Farrell; and Rilla Svirbly, Sharon; a brother, Robert Merat and his wife, Esther, Sharon; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Church of the Good Shepherd, 3613 Sharon Road (Route 18), West Middlesex 16159.
