Community Band marking its silver anniversary
The Mercer Community Band, under the direction of Dr. Hendley D. Hoge and Kenneth Jewell, will perform its 25th anniversary concert at 7:30 p.m. today on Mercer County Courthouse Square.
The program will include marches, hymns, popular tunes, novelty and patriotic numbers and the traditional sing-along. The band will premiere Dr. Michael Martin's "The Courthouse Square March," which was commissioned for the occasion.
Guest soloist David Hamilton of Hermitage will offer an Elvis Presley tribute and a rendition of "How Great Thou Art." Guest instrumental soloist Stacey Steele, the flute instructor at Slippery Rock University, will perform "Variations on Carnival of Venice."
Penn-Ohio Singers, a barbershop chorus, will provide warm-up entertainment ,beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Friends of the Mercer Area Library will host an old-fashioned ice cream social throughout the evening. In case of bad weather, the concert will be held in Mercer High School auditorium, a block away.
