Outdoor music for Lube Bike Nite, Greenville Beverage is silenced

Herald Staff Writer

» Outdoor music will no longer be a part of Quaker Steak & Lube's popular Bike Nite because of a recent citation by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.

George Warren, owner of Three By the River in downtown Sharon, said the business was cited by the state police bureau of liquor control enforcement in early July because of a disc jockey playing in the parking lot.

Bike Nite has been held for seven years and draws hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts.

"We ceased to have DJs in the parking lot," Warren said. "I think it affects the level of entertainment we can provide for people. I don't think it will end the event."

Greenville Beverage in Hempfield Township was issued a similar citation recently because a disc jockey played '50s music during the beer distributor's bimonthly Classic Car Cruise-in. Owner Gary Kidd said he's held the event for three years with no problems but was told this month his business could no longer sponsor the event.

Molly McGowan, a spokesperson for the PLCB in Harrisburg, said the citations against Quaker Steak & Lube and Greenville Beverage have not shown up on state computers in Harrisburg.

Greenville Beverage does not have a restaurant or bar license amusement permit because it is strictly a beer distributor, Ms. McGowan said.

Even though Quaker Steak & Lube has an amusement permit, the law prohibits music outside the premises, she said.

Warren said Three By the River had special events permits for outdoor festivities, such as the former Bavarian Fun Fest with its tents and vendors.

Sgt. Gary Dance of the state police bureau of liquor control enforcement said both businesses were cited as a result of investigations that stemmed from complaints. The fact that both Greenville Beverage and Quaker Steak & Lube were cited at about the same time is "just a coincidence," he said.
