5 injured in crash
of 2 cars,
pickup

Five people were hurt in a three-vehicle accident Friday night that witnesses told police may have been caused by speeders on East State Street in Hermitage.

Police gave the following account of the 10:26 p.m. crash:

A car driven by Joseph Toth, 17, of 4192 Blue Jay Drive, South Pymatuning Township, pulled from Wick Avenue into the passing lane of East State, hitting a westbound car driven by Nathan G. Horning, 17, of 1072 Glenwood Drive, Sharon.

Horning's car hit a westbound pickup traveling in the curb lane of East State; it was driven by Courtney Snyder, 20, of New Castle, police said.

The Horning car went out of control and rolled onto its roof, sliding for 20 feet before hitting a flower barrel and curb in front of a car dealership; it then flipped end over end for 136 feet, stopping in front of Boyd Drive, police said.

Witnesses told police that the Horning and Snyder cars were traveling at least 70 mph, but all three drivers claimed they did not know each other and were not racing, police said.

Horning and two passengers in his car, Danielle Ray, 17, of 112 Hazen Place, Sharon, and Samantha Ray, 16, of Kinsman, were treated at UPMC Horizon, Farrell, the emergency room supervisor said.

Ms. Snyder and her passenger, Daniel Pauline, 25, New Castle RD 3, were treated at the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System, according to Patient Care Services.
